640 no dash

A local gun store has a 640 nd for sale.

Price is $499. Very nice condition.

It has the forged, flash chrome trigger so probably an early model.

A couple issues.

It's very shiny. Perhaps polished. Or did the factory ship them that way.

Second it has smooth grips. Not the usual checkered j framed grips. Did some ship that way?

That's an original, just as you described it. Bet the serial number prefix is CEN.

Smooth wood stocks were on the originals. The factory finish isn't matte but it's not high polish either. A 640 no dash at the asking price is a "buy" as long as it doesn't fail any of the used S&W revolver tests.

I toted my early (yes CEN s/n) so much in close body contact that I wore the grip finish well down. I applied a good coat of bar sealer (like what Joe's Bar & Grill uses on their bar top) and continued on. Durable as heck finish.

The next time you see it, ask to open the cylinder and see if "Tested For Plus P+" is printed on the inside of the frame where the cylinder stop is located. If so, that is a heck of a deal and buy it quick. Only a few of the earlier ones had that marking.

I carried my 640 a CEN prefix in a Legster ankle holster for several years. The only wear is on the right grip and it's from on the rubbing on the holster
