I'm planning to pick up a J-Frame soon for pocket carry and "deep concealment" when my 1911 or G19 won't do.

I think the Airweight is probably the best choice bue to its light wiehgt. The 640 is just danged sexy and probably more shootable due to its weight. However, I'm afraid it will be too much gun for comfortable pocket carry, especially in light weight suit pants.

What say you?

I own a 640. I like it very much and carry it on most days. It is not a good pocket gun especially in a suit.

I've had a 640 and now have a 642. I wanted the .357 option but the 640 was not fun with them. The 642 is A LOT lighter to carry and I love the crimson tracer. It is a pleasure with .38s or +p's. I would go 642 or 442. I carry at 1 o'clock IWB pretty comfortably but have ordered a Mika pocket holster just because of all of the great feedback I've heard.

Had two 642s and a 442. I like them alot for pocket carry. Then I found a 640 at a good price and thought it would be nice to have the .357 option. I soon decided the 640 was to heavy for pocket carry. If I'm going to carry a gun IWB, I might as well go for a .45.

The 640 is currently up for consignment sale at a local gun shop - no regrets.

Thanks for the replies guys. You've confirmed what I though. I'll be placing an order for a no lock 442 or maybe 642 soon.

The 442 is noticeably lighter than the 640's. I have both and never found the 640 really comfortable for pocket carry. The 442 on the other hand, rides unnoticed in most any pocket.
I keep mine loaded with Speer 135gr Gold Dot +Ps, their "short barrel" load.

Went the whole gamut from 642 il to 340il to 642-1 no lock. Best power per weight ratio with controllable D/A combat shooting. The buck stops here. No-lock 642-1.

Seems to me that about 15-16 ounces, loaded, is the top limit for comfortable and effective pocket carry. That leaves out the 640. This has been my experience. I'd go with the 442 or one of the 340 guns for that purpose.

I too suggest one of the NO LOCK Airweight 442-1/642-1s..
The only thing easier to carry would be one of the Airlite 34X guns..
I've found that anything heavier will get left behind..

I had both a 640 in 357 and a 642... I loved the 642 for just what ya want. It left not long ago because it had the lock and it bugged me even though I had no issues with it. I had bought it to use instead of the 640 which really does need a proper holster- it is heavy for pocket carry although mine is pulling house and yard duty in my carhart jacket pocket. You do definately know its there when I go feed the outdoor woodburner etc.

I do want another 442/642 one of these days for pocket carry and house duty but went to a kahr polymer auto when I sold the 642.
