640 Pro side plate?

I am using my second 640 Pro. This one and the first have sideplate issues. I was wondering if others have the problem of ill fit in that the plate has a ridge in the hammer area only. It is as if the plates weren't properly fitted, smoothed etc. I am a little anal, but this is annoying to me. I'll look in the smith area, but believe this to not be a smith issue.

I don’t understand what you mean by believing ‘this not to be a smith issue ‘ and by saying you’ll ‘look in the smith area’.

Don't think it is a gunsmith issue, which is the reason I ask about it here. A person who owns one of these can slide their finger over the area where the plate meets the frame and will feel a snag, but only at the top of the gun where the hammer might otherwise be. It will not show up in a pic. Thanks tho.

Fit and finish on recent production Smiths sometimes leave much to be desired.

You can call Smith’s customer service to see if they’ll send you a shipping label so they can look at it.

Be prepared for them to tell you your guns are within spec (most likely outcome), then if they do something to correct the problem you can be pleasantly surprised.

Since you have 2 of these guns that both display the issue, I’d bet they are within spec: something to learn to live with.

My side plate is fine, but I had 3-4 burrs the size of speed bumps in the action. Easily fixed by a competent Smith mechanic, but this should have been caught by the PC. I thought MIM was supposed to eliminate these issues.

Had to do it. Removed sideplate and using an arkansas stone, smoothed out what looked and felt like burrs on the outer edge of the sideplate. Now the issue is gone. I was just curious if anyone else who owned one of these had similar issues. Thanks everyone!

I got my 640 Pro at the end of November and I traded a 640-3 for it. I was amazed at the quality of the Pro vs the 640-3. The fit, finish and I would say the stainless steel in the Pro Series is better than the 640-3. I Love my 640 Pro Series.

Owning guns, especially revolvers, almost requires the owner to become capable of minor DIY things. Or else you will be worrying and sending guns back to the factory all the time.

In this case, a little stone work fixed the issue. Sending it back to S&W would've been a waste probably.

In this day and age, "accepting" certain shortcomings is almost required too. They are mass produced items, being made as cheaply as possible, with increased tolerances, and by machines that are programmed and set up by people. What could go wrong?

It's been like this for the majority of the post ww2 era.
