There is a very tiny scatch on my new 642 Airweight. (dull silver finish) This is a stainless cylinder, alloy frame. It's not at all a big deal but I was wondering if there is a preferred paint just to touch it up.
I really like the gun but I don't shoot it much.

If it's a carry piece, it's going to get more scratches in time. Put 50 rounds through it next range trip and forget about the scratch. :D

all my guns have a scratch here & there. it doesn't bother me because i shoot all my guns, no safe queens here. just normal wear & tear. you guys should see my enfield no. 4, that guns been to hell & back.

You fellows are certainly correct, it's just that it looks so nice new. The inevitable wear will follow, I am sure.

I totally understand. I get that way about my blued guns. I want them to look as good as possible. For some reason, I don't care about that much about how my "gray" guns look. I do like my polished Model 64 and spend a lot of time cleaning and polishing it after a trip to the range.

John,

Any attempt to "fix it" will in all likelihood stick out more so than the actual scratch does. If you carry/shoot your piece it is inevitable, scratches will come.

I'm not sure but the finishes on some of the 642's is/was known to flake off. Maybe someone more familiar with the flaking will post here. In short don't sweat the small stuff....:)

I tend to stress a bit as well about the smallest scratches and dings, so it helps a little to think of these guns more as tools (rather than priceless works of art). Who cares if a hammer has a scratch on it? But it only helps a little.

Yeah I fill you're pain. Got me a screaming deal a few years ago on a S&W 638 at a gun show. They had to put that stupid tie strap through it that I had to cut off when I got home. It was so tight I scratched my gun getting it off. I was PO'ed for about a month but time heals old wounds.
After all it is a pocket gun and will be used often.

I agree if its a "carry piece" don't worry about the scratches cause they're gonna happen. My 637 knock on wood doesn't have any scratches in the 6yrs I've owned it but there is a small spot where the clear coat is flaking off the aluminum frame, oh well gives it a little character !

There is a line between "use" and "abuse". Honest wear and tear is one thing, damage caused by recklessness or neglect is something else. My 642 is my EDC. Fortunately, it still looks good. I apply a good coat of wax to all of my handguns every few months, and I think it helps.

Best of luck,

Dave

I think one member reported using automotive clearcoat touchup with good results.

From what I understand, the Model 642 frames are painted with some type of silver paint and then have a clearcoat applied on top of that.

I see lots of replies but no definitive answer. I have no argument with the replies that have been made. I know that if a "tool" is used it will show some wear. However has anyone actually bought any touch up paint that covers scratches on the model 642? If so what brand and color?

I don't know of any way to clean up scratches beyond sending the gun back to S&W, and that will be expensive. Like others here my carry guns show their character, the older the more character they have.
