642 as BUG or Only Carry

Marshall was a young cop and off duty. IIRC he didn't say never carry a J frame as a primary. He said never carry a single J frame.

The way I remember it, the two armed robbers were furious that E.M. had shot at them, injuring one, and were getting ready to kill him when two other Detroit cops showed up and sent their *s to the canvas. He was down to his last shot in the gun, with no reload. He was trapped in a back corner of the store, as I recall, and had run to the corner store to get milk for his children.

I'm no Evan Marshall, but if you walk out of the house without at least one reload you're a dumbass, I don't care what gun you're carrying.

As I said earlier in this thread, I carry a j-frame as a BUG and off duty but I ALWAYS have at least two spare moonclips with me, if not a spare gun.

Two is one, one is none.

Yes never ever go without one or two reloads even for ccw. Young rookie cops if they live learn from there mistakes. I remember one Texas Ranger who left his gunbelt and extra ammo to go to Mexico to get a whore. So he stuck his SA Colt 45LC in his belt. Guess what he ran into a gang that he had killed there kin. He got into a gun fight and ran out of his 5- shots and was ran down and shot to hell! The year was the 1880,s. Never go without a reload!!! Hum a century and some years ago. Do the rules change!

I live in an extremely low crime area. One of those places where half the people don't lock their front doors. There hasn't been a violent crime in town for.... well.. I can't even recall any. The only crimes are generally automobile or alcohol related. The being said, I carry a 642 and a 642 only when I'm around town or the surrounding areas. When I head to more.. gritty.. areas, I'll carry one of my high cap .40s and my 642 (sometimes an extra mag for the .40).

Like almost everyone else, I carry a J frame most of the time, along with a reload within reach. My 637 has been converted to 9mm moonclips, and a fully loaded reload is much more compact than a .357/.38 Special
speedloader. I also have another gun in my car, a M&P plus a reload. I feel pretty well heeled for where ever I'm going. If the area is so "bad" that I'm uncomfortable, it's time for me to leave.

Congratulations on becoming yet another licensed Texan! Well over 300,000 of us now. I've been a Texas CHL Instructor since 1995. To me, 5-shot Js are backups, and I often carry one (today, for instance) as just that. In a self-defense context, regardless of what "statistics" may tell you, there is no such thing as "overkill." Heck, I even make sure my spare tire is aired-up!

That said, if a 642 is all you're carrying, it still beats hell out of praying or begging for mercy!

I EDC with a TN HCP. My self defense system is based around a 642 (summer) or 640 (winter) carry as primary arm.I find that the S&W Centennial fits my "Gray Man" profile perfectly. I am retired and nobody tells me where to go, so I deliberately avoid the "3 S" places. I live in a very well policed small community and my home is "hardened" for security. However, I am well aware that my environment is not the rule for a lot of other people and heavier equipment may be necessary for others.
