Hello,
I am a newbie and do not know much about guns. I got a 642 earlier today for concealed carry. The cylinder release on it takes a lot more force to move forward than the Rossi .38 special that I have. Is that normal? Do some guns take more strength to push the cylinder release forward?

Matt,
Hard to give you a good answer. I am sure that the "feel" of this part

will be different in any two firearms---even two of the same model. My

442 feels a little stiffer than my wifes 637. Both of these feel different

when compared to our model 17. As long as it functions positively and

releases properly evey time I would not be concerned. Maybe try adding

a drop of oil on the cylinder pin back bearing in the recoil shield(pull the

cylinder realease button back when you do this so the oil goes down in

the hole. Also add a drop of oil to the front bearing in the barrel underlug

on the front end. This may or may not show any improvement. The

springs involved in this may eventually lose some of their power and

feel lighter over time. Anyway the 642 is a fine choice for CC. Get out

there and shoot it.

Jared,
Thanks for the reply, It is much appreciated. I am going to shoot it for the first time this weekend (the closest range is 45 minutes away). I will try the oil after I clean it from my first range trip. Thanks again man!

Hey Matt, I own a coupla dozen revolvers--Colts and S&Ws. My new 642 has the stiffest cylinder release of them all. I was also concerned, and had my 'smith take a peek at it. He said it was fine--would probably improve over time. Jared gave you good advice...............one eye joe

Yes, it will get easier as you break it in.

Those of mighty S&W fine revolvers . . . a gun you'll probably cherish for a lifetime.
