I only shot around 400-600 rounds or so since owning it...The aluminum alloy frame is taking a beating from opening/closing the cylinder and I have no idea what Smith is going to do about that pitting or crack by the firing pin bushing... If they offer me a replacement gun I would choose something else. The 642 is a great carry gun but not built to last at the shootin' range IMO.

I agree they are NOT range guns, that is why (at least for me) I don't use them as "range guns".

I have 2 642's, first purchased about 20 or so years ago (I believe about 1996-1998) and they are still going.

Of course I also have a couple of 640's that I use to take some "wear and tear" off the 642's, yet function basically the same, just a bit heavier.

So yes, I agree with you, in that if you want the 642 to be your "range gun", that you will likely be better served by another handgun.

Yeah, but you shoot them at the range, I'm guessing. LOL.

I would like to see a pic of the OP's 642. But it was a long time ago he posted, so. That ship might have sailed.

What kind of ammo are you using? That looks like the primers are blowing out.

Factory Remington 130gr FMJ's, Remington Golden sabre +P, Monarch 158gr JHP, Federal American eagle 158gr LRN. WWB 38 special and a handful of CCI/Speer shotshells.
