My son just got a new 642 and he was showing it to me I tried the trigger out on it and it totaly different from mine and my wifes . Our 642-2 have a nice smoth pull all the way through until the trigger breaks just like all of my S&W revolvers (thats why I buy them) .
My son's has a farely decent pull if you do it rapidly but you can feel a noticible resistence at trigger break . Were it feels really different is in a slower pull on the trigger you have a farely smoth pull until right before trigger break hammer fall and then you hit a wall of probley 7-8 pound on the trigger then it breaks cleanly.
What I thought I would ask the experts here is this how triggers come now?Or will it change after dry fireing ? Should he contact the mother ship to send it back ? What is even worse is I dont know if I may not like the defenent wall before the break . Thanks in advance for any help.

I had a 642 years ago that was still fairly new, maybe 50 rounds on it. One afternoon at the range it developed a very hard trigger pull. I shot it a few more times and it nearly locked up. l took it to a gunsmith I trust and he pulled the cylinder off the crane/spindle and out fell metal shavings from the manufacturing/machining process. He blew it out with compressed air and added a drop of Cleanzoil and it was fine after that.

I hope your fix is as easy.

Good advice. It's a carry gun. It MUST function. If you're feeling uncomfortable, take it to a 'smith. Put your mind (and your trigger pull) at ease.

Copy that it is a gun on his carry permit . I will try to get him to send it to smith and wesson or at least take it to a good gun smith. Thanks

If you have any gunsmithing ability at all you can probably do it youself. All type of videos on you tube about spring replacement that can show you how to get in there. Miculek has a good one. Hope that helps save you a few bucks.

If it is not dirty inside - I've never seen that with a new SW - it will benefit from ample dry firing, preferably with snap caps. I suggest cleaning and firing before taking it to someone.

Sounds like tight hand to ratchet fit. I have has this on a 642 and a 686. After a couple of thousand cycles it has improved some but not gone away. The design of the ratchet star is different than older S&W's.

I have installed apex spring kits in j-frames before and done some light polishing of internals but I think a trip back to smith before we try to open it up. Don't want to void any of the warranty by starting to mess with it . My gut feeling is it has some debris in it or it needs to be dry fired a lot . will keep all of the ideas in mined if it is not up to snuff when we get it back from the mother ship thanks for all the ideas

Mine are smooth, no stacking as you describe. I'd first try blowing it out with compressed air and then some oil.

If you know how to take the sideplate off I'd recommend opening it up and taking a look for debris if the air/oil does not help.

Otherwise, if it's new, I'd send it to S&W for a check.

Good luck.
