This is the story:

-as yet to be fired NEW M642 no-lock
-worked fine in the shop (of course)
-dry fired ~150 rds (with snap caps)
-no problems first ~130 "clicks"
-then, trigger pull became VERY stiff
-cylinder does not release/move and rotates (SNAPS) almost "just as" the gun clicks

Diagnosis?

I had a 642's trigger stud break off several months back from normal use.......you could have had that happen as well. S&W replaced the frame and stamped on the same serial # and I got it in a reasonable amount of time.

As HK said, open her up or send it off.

Call S&W and they will send a return label for UPS and it will not cost you a dime and they use over nite delivery both ways. Just make sure you put in a note to call or email before shipping as you will have to sign for the gun when it comes back. My guess is 10 to 14 days turn around time.

Thanks all.

I figured I had nothig to lose by trying again and, wouldn't you know it, the gun worked fine (dry fire) for 100+ clicks.

Worked both with and without the snap caps. Nothing. Not hitch. I like this gun.

I noticed what appears to be oil seeping out along the top of the length of the sideplate. I had not noticed this before today.

Hmmmmmm. . . .

Bad head gasket? Cracked dipstick tube? Oil cap not tight? Loose filter?

All kidding aside, I just now wiped the gun clean and then dry fired another 100 clicks. More oil, not as much as before but still apparently getting forced out when the trigger is pulled and cylinder turns.

I have a hunch.
