My beloved 645, has been having FTE intermittently recently. Close inspection of extractor shows a little chewed up. Numrich has the part, thinking of replacing it myself, looks like drive out the retaining pin, with punch in place - slide in new extractor - correct, is this a non gunsmith task? Thanks

Getting the extractor's tension on the cartridge rim correct takes some specialized tools. One of our members here, he goes by BMCM, can certainly replace the extractor and set the tension. A qualified gunsmith with the knowledge and tools should be able to do it. S&W might still do it too.

If you decide to DIY it, drive out the extractor pin from the top of the slide, do not drive the pin out from the bottom. The hole in the slide has a slight taper, the hole is smaller at the top of the slide than at the bottom. Plenty of S&W slides have been damaged by driving the pin out from the bottom.

If you do it yourself you'll need a starter punch. S&W put those pins in to stay.
