645 magazines

Which magazines have proven to be the most reliable in the S&W 645? I have the one with stainless, black and orange followers to choose from. Alternatively which ones should I stay awat from?

With the older mags I dont think it makes a difference which follower, but if any have a yellow mag spring you need to replace the spring, the yellow one were weak and wore out quickly, these came out in the later 90's. bob

All of my 4506-1 mags have black followers, not a single malfunction to date (spanning 2000 through today).

I have magazines with stainless, black plastic and orange plastic followers, there doesn't seem to be a dimes worth of difference between the three...

I've used the original with metal follower and metal base plate, as well as the later yellow and current issue black followers. No issues with any of them.

IIRC, the OEM mags with the metal followers and base plates had a problem with the retention of the base plate. You could find all your rounds and mag springs on the ground when the base plate decided to come off.

The yellow follower mags attempted to hold the top round back with identions at the top of the mag, aft of the feed lips. Evidently it was not completely successful, as the black followers added a little dimple to the middle of the follower to achieve the same goal.

I use the yellow follower mags for practice/IDPA and the current issue black follower mags for serious purposes. Hope this helps!

I get my 645 out of layaway next month to replace a 645 I had to sell. Great 45! Regards 18DAI.

The replacement followers are all black now even for the "yellow" tubes. The main difference is the square indents at the top of the feedlips, it holds the top round down and back some. I've never had any problems with the earlier mags myself but have since replaced all of them with the new style.
