Hello everyone,
I picked up a Hogue Tamer grip for my 649-2 to help soften the recoil for my girlfriend in case she ever needed to use it. Grip states it's for J Framed 642s, I have it on my 649 at moment but wasn't able to stuff the small slide piece that goes in the rear part of the grip prior to putting the bottom section on. Has anyone tried this grip on this particular gun before or is not really made for this model. I don't really have much knowledge about these guns and if grips are "universal" for any J frame. My gun does have the round frame with the grip also states it fits.

Thanks!

Try calling Hogue Customer Service. I've gone to them before for small parts and they are very responsive. AFAIK the frame dimensions on a round butt J-frame hasn't changed in 60 years. There's nothing special about a M649, it should fit, though I'm not familiar with the Tamer grip specifically. A picture of your M649 with the grips off would help.

Thanks for the info, I pretty much gave up on it. I battled that grip trying to get it on and was starting to tear it up fighting to get it to fit. Wish it would have worked out, I liked the feel of the grip, was a bit wider than the one I have on there now. Guess I'll keep looking.

Hogue offers the Tamer to tame Centennial models. I've not handled one, but I don't think the 649 has the same profile above the grip frame as a Centennial so it makes sense to me--just looking at pictures--that the grip would tear on the 649.

It does fit, but lots of guys have problems getting them on. There's a trick, or something......

Well there ya go, interesting...maybe I'll see if I can find out what the trick is. I like the grip, feels nice, but my problem was getting that cap over the pin so it would lock in place.

The first time I put mine on my 442 it was a challange. It got easier after I did it a couple times.

The Centennial Tamer is a great ergonomic enhancement for a J frame. That said, it's a bit bulky for pocket carry. It's something of a challenge to install, as well.

Got one on my M640-1, that rides around town in an Andrews belt holster.

Recommend you keep working on it.

BTW, you might review the instructions again, as they reference the S&W Bodyguard model. The Bodyguard is (I think) the new polymer frame model - as opposed to the M649. The "t" shaped spacer should be removed for the steel / alloy Centennial models, & probably your M649, as well.

If you decide to throw in the towel (& the grip is not damaged) let me know, & maybe we can work something out.
