I just found a 649-2 with a BNY prefix on the serial number. I looked in Supica and cant find any reference to that particular listing. Similar prefixes were made in the early 90's. Any ideas? Thanks.

The listings in the book are not all-inclusive, so guesstimating between the ones that are printed is necessary, unless you have a factory letter.

Email S&W with the model and serial number. They get back to you in a few days with the DOB - no charge if you don't want a "letter."

I was holding out hope that it was a prefix reserved for NYPD or something like that, although it's not a DAO. I'll do some more checking. Thanks for the replies!

Like was stated earlier, you kinda have to read between the lines on the serial number prefixes. Those prefixes are what was turned into them before publication and confirmed by S&W. So if you have something that falls close to it but is not listed you have to guess it would be close to it. Thats why BNY is probably from mid '93.

Also, the 649 nor any other Bodyguard model was ever authorized by NYPD for use. As far as J frames go it was the 36, 60 (for a very short time and then no longer allowed), and the 640.
