A 649-3 with box just popped up. The guy says it is in "very good shape". He is asking $425. I am trying to get more info, but so far, that is all I know. I am attaching the photos he has posted.

What do you think?

They're nice guns if you want a .357 Magnum and don't mind a slight bit of extra weight. I would be very interested for the price.

I love my 649-2, even though it's strictly a .38 Special.

I had an older 49, and regret the heck outta letting that one go... i have been looking for a 649, or 640 recently and that is a good price from what i have seen. jump on it!

I have that same revolver. 649-3 in the small plastic case. I have the fired
envelope / casing dated April 2001. It is my EDC. It is also a very good price. I would not even blink while taking out my wallet if I was there and had the opportunity.

Do you think those are the original grips? They don't appear to be branded, so, I'm not sure.

A J-frame wasn't on my radar, but sometimes that's how it goes. We'll see where this leads. Might add it to the collection. Thanks

I am pretty sure mine came with Uncle Mikes grips. It definitely did not come with S&W Magnas or the Combats you see on mine. So if it didn't come with what it has on it they would have still been rubber.
Edit: I just checked the SCSW 4th ed and they did come from the factory with Uncle Mikes Combat Grips and or Boot grips.

The Bodyguard revolvers make a lot of sense. Easy to draw from concealment without snagging, yet offering the ability to do a precision single-action shot at longer range if need be.

Here are my two. The first is a Model 49 "no dash" nickeled, shipped in February, 1976.

...and this is a 649-4, shipped in 1997. It's equipped with Barami Hip Grips for pocket carry.

I paid more for mine that had been run hard and put away wet (literally). Corrosion under the grips, broken cylinder release stud, clocked barrel. Sent to S&W for repairs, polish and trigger job. Now my favorite handgun (only 3). It also sports an XS small dot front sight and a Crimson Trace green laser. So for 2 reasons it’s not going anywhere, to much money in it and I really like it!

All depends on condition. From what I read on this Forum, it is possible to buff out wear marks on a stainless gun, more so than on a blued model. Besides that, how much wear is on the gun? Are the chambers scoured from excess .38 firing and no cleaning? What about headspace? Timing? Endshake? Any chance of it being a pig in a poke? Caveat emptor. YMMV.

Update: Here is my new-to-me 649-3. Serial prefix CCD. Mechanics are solid. No real marks on it. It came with the box, but no papers. It definitely has MIM parts, but I think that is common on the -3s. $428 otd.

It looks like you got a great revolver at a great price. If I had seen it, I would have been "all over it". IMHO the 649s are the best choice in small revolvers. No snag draw and you can thumb cock if need be. I know all the gurus say single action has no place on a revolver but I beg to differ and will not give that feature up.

I have two 649 no "-" guns and I will never sell them. I have wanted to add a .357 "no hole" to my collection for some time.
