Have had four of these over the years. The only one I kept was one that had some scuff marks and was Mag-Na-Ported...

Today a young friend called to tell me about a 657 3" he had just purchased...it was only 100 or so serial numbers up from mine and was also Mag-Na-Ported.

I've also seen quite a few on the auction sites that were also Mag-Na-Ported...

So the question...does anyone know of the 5500 made, was there a run of these done, maybe for some distributor, that were all Mag-Na-Ported from the factory....

As to my friend...he got his for $725.00 at a local shop. It didn't have the original Combats on it and has a few scuffs but didn't look like it had been fired much. The sales person said it was so cheap because they couldn't get any ammo for it...and this shop sells on on GunBroker and could have easily doubled their money...

Thanks...Bob

I can't comment on whether or not there were any that were Mag-Na-Ported from the factory. I just recently acquired one after years of being snake bit on trying to acquire one. It wasn't shot much outside of factory test firing it appears. I plan to remedy that shortly. Your friend stole his at that price. Prices have sky rocketed over the last five years. They show up on auction sites quite frequently, so while not rare there is a lot of competition to purchase one.

That is a deal in today's market

Mine was a Pawn Shop rescue more than three decades ago . . . . . . . . It came with Pachmayers

There was no "Factory" offered 3" 657 with Mag-na-Porting back in 1986 as Smith & Wesson only had a single product code for all of those revolvers.

But it would not be unusual for an outside company to buy a block of revolvers and have something done to them. Like all of those American Historical editions

That being said, I do not recall such an offering

Thanks for all the information... I should have looked to see if there happened to be a separate product code...
