I'm looking to put tritium sights on my 659. It has the dovetail rear and fixed blade front. Is it better to get my slide machined to accept the more common 5906 sight set with front and rear dovetails or send the slide to someone who can drill the existing sights and push tritium tubes into them? I kind of remember that being a thing in the late 80's. Also, will a 5906 rear dovetail sight fit a 659 dovetail? Not sure what to do here.

The Trijicon SA04 rear sight should fit the 659 fixed dovetail but the front sight would need to be machined. Meprolight used to make a 2nd gen set where the front night sight is pinned to the fixed sight (pictured). Unfortunately they are discontinued and even if you found an old stock set, Meprolight does not re-lamp sights like Trijicon does.
Another option is to find an inexpensive 5906 top end and use that on your 659 frame.

Trijicon used to drill fixed front sights to insert a tritium front sight module/lamp then you could use a fixed rear or adjustable blade night sight depending on which rear sight your slide has.

You could contact Trijicon to see if they still drill front sights. I've seen S&W revolver front sights where tritium insert was added to model 13/65.

My S&W 39-2, 439 and 5904 have been relegated to non carry guns. I keep them because I carried those guns in years past. My current carry guns are more modern pistols with night sights.

I was thinking about the slide swap but a slide is about a hundred doll hairs. I think I'm going to contact Trigicon and see if they'll install a tube in at least the front blade. The rear sight I'll swap out for a Trigicon SA04 if it'll fit.
