6592 values - 2023?

Hi all,

Long time lurker but first time poster here. Was fortunate to acquire a very good condition example of the 6592 earlier this year. Thanks to the wealth of knowledge already posted here, I have a pretty good handle on the history of these guns but what I am trying to figure out now is a more current valuation as some of the previous posts are several years old.

Welcome to the S&W forums! The Model 6592 is so obscure that my first thought was that you had the wrong model number, but then I used my Google-fu and found that there is such a thing. They are truly a rare production model with only 249 known to have been made. They are a transitional model, using the 2nd generation Model 659 slide assemblies mated to very early production 3rd generation Model 5906 receiver assemblies.


As to value, that would depend upon condition, is it used or unfired outside of the factory test firing, original box, papers, both magazines, and cleaning tools. What would I expect to pay for one? Beats me, I've never actually seen one.

I can only tell you what I've found having been looking at these on Gunbroker occasionally over the last decade...

-ALL- of the transitional model have some bump in market value over the models they are most closely associated with, but there's two large caveats:

1) condition needs to be extremely high

2) seriously cannot state this enough: original box with serial number matching intact end label as this shows the "Model Number"

I say "Model Number" because these varied and I am not certain why or how they varied, but most guns just like yours are typically named a 6591 so it's curious why yours is a 6592. Same for the 6451 and other transitional guns.

It seems like these pistols occupy an odd place with a small cult following. Frankly, it really appears as if many folks have picked these up on occasion in the used market and they've simply seen a normal life (more than 30 years now) of service, and they show it.

They either are not rare enough or their cult following not large enough to garner some high-end dollar price/value unless they are collector grade condition and the small group of folks that find these interesting are chasing after them.

I've also found that the transitional guns (typically a mix of 2nd Gen and 3rd Gen parts but with 2nd Gen Model names stamped on the frame, the four digit transitional model number on the box label and 3rd Gen delrin (zytel...? pre-recall...?) one piece grips on them are far more easily found than the really rare AIP-serial prefix guns from the "automatic improvement program."

That's my way of saying that the four digit transitional guns appear in discussion on here occasionally and they appear on Gunbroker with some occasion and yet I never see on Gunbroker and nor do I ever hear on this forum discussion of the AIP-prefix guns.

The AIP's seem to be more rare than hen's teeth.

Back to the top-- market price of a 6592? My best guess based on what I've seen is somewhere near what someone might pay for a totally NIB/unused/mint 659 or 5906, and only if the transitional is in top condition with all original stuff, especially including SN-matched box with end label.
