66-2 4" What is fair Price

Thanks for all the responses and the market gauges in your areas.
I'm gonna try and work him down under 500 and if i can get it for
around 450-475 i'll consider myself fortunate to get it. The gun is next to new. I don't have the faintest idea of the 98% gun vs. 95%
How does this rating system typically work? I will normally call a gun
that has no holster/box/drawer wear on the end of barrel or cylinder a
95% gun. It has to be next to new with "No" visable wear to get my 98% rate. Of course in both cases no discoloration of any kind on exposed metal areas. Thanks again to all.

Chuck

I'd try to get him down to $400. Heck, for $400-$450 you can pick up a 686 L-Frame(at least in my neck of the woods you can) and have something a bit better for full power 357Mag loads.

I know it's apples to oranges BUT Mark at Summit Gun Broker has Pre-Owned SIG Pro 2340's, 12+1 shot, 40cal for $325. Add in FFL fees and I can get one out the door for $375, no way I'd pay more then that for a 6 shot revolver. I firmly believe in getting the most Bang for my Buck.

Sig vs Smith is like elephant vs ant, no comparison at all, unless price only is your base.

Btw folks, J&G is selling 4 inch 66's for $469. Not a screaming deal, but not bad either. I'm sure some gun dealers will be scooping them up and reselling at gunshows.

More Smith's for the rest of us, thanks.

Perhaps you will find it more to your liking at a Sig forum TNFrank!;)

John

Already a member,LOL. Also on the Beretta forum and the Ruger forum too.
I know this is the S&W forum so folks will be biased toward S&W guns. I've owned a lot of S&W's, mostly revolvers but also a couple semi-autos and none of em' except for maybe my M27's had the quality of the Sig P239 and P225 that I had.
S&W's(just like Rugers and Taurus) are basic, utilitarian guns that do the job but the majority of em' are far from being works of art. A Sig P229 on the other hand is one of my dream guns but they're on the expensive side of the coin for me.

TNFrank,

Hang around here long enough and you will eventually come to know quality. In the mean time don't act like a troll and have some manners.

Here's my soul-less, dime a dozen, looks like every other black gun, crank em' out as fast as you can, P226

I bought it when I knew very little about the beauty of S&W's

Hey, I resemble that remark. LOL
I've owned so many S&W revolvers over the years that I can recall all of em' so I do know that they're a quality gun but they're a Chevy of the gun world and as someone who owns a Chevy truck that IS a compliment IMHO.
Sig and Beretta, while not making revolvers do make a very high end semi IMHO and if you push quality for quality I'd say they're better then the S&W in that dept. but like I've also said, to me a gun is a tool to be used, not some work of art to be put in a safe and looked at every now and again.

P.S.
Short list of the S&W revolvers that I've owned and can remember:
M29- 4", M657- 2.5" round butt, M13- 4", Heavy Duty, nickel-4", M27 3.5" and 8 3/8", M36- 1 7/8", M12-4", and my current 642- 1 7/8". Also, almost forgot it, M28-6" and there's probably a couple three or four others I can't remember.

TNFrank,

Here is a quality piece that few have ever had the pleasure of handling or shooting. This gun is truely a work of art.

I do remember saying that my M27's were the exception. They ARE truly works of art and craftsmanship. ;)
Also, I totally forgot to add the 686+, 2.5" to my list. Had to order it in to the local Pawn Shop so I paid full price for it, no deals like I'd normally get. It was $450 out the door and that was in the mid-'90's.

I was at a local shop this last week and bought a 66-1 NIB for $560. It has a 2 1/2" barrel couldn't get my cash out fast enough. I shop around and go to many gun shops and all revolvhes have jumped at least $ 100. in the last year or two. Hey sig lover stop by dunkin donuts in Exeter Nh in the eary morning and take a look at some of sigs best LOL.

I just picked up a 66-2, 2.5 inch from 1986 that looked unfired for 500.00 (no box) as a second carry gun and I love it. The first time I shot it I had clover leaf groups off a rest at 20' and off-hand double action had 18 rounds with nothing outside the 8 ring. Then just for s**ts and giggles was easily busting clay pigeons off-hand lying in the backstop at 60+ feet. I don't think you can ask for much more than that.

The 226 I posted above is a replacement gun for the original Sig I had. After 500 rounds the frame rails separated from the frame. They replaced the gun under warranty, but I don't trust it enough to carry for self defense. Makes a fine range gun though.
Only Sig I own, and the last.

ladder13,

Yes a registered magnum. The reg. mag is a different gun than the 27. I have had some 27's, and have a 627-0 also.

The registered magnum is a work of art inside and out. You must truely own one and shoot it to fully appriciate it. Mine was a ex police dept. gun and showed wear. BUT it shot like a work of art. You just couldn't miss with it. It was smooth as silk. Everything on the inside was machined, no stanpings or MIM, and polished. Very few tooling marks on the inside.

That is one gun I do regret selling, but I am a shooter and not a collector. The person who bought it from me is a collector. I just felt it was better off with him than me. I am not as knowledgable as most here and I did not want to make a mistake with a work of art that can't be repaired.

I am NOT a S&W collector, but I know quality when I see it. The reg. mag. the best handgun I have ever shot. That includes the many bottom feeders that my friends have let me shoot to try and get me to convert to the plastic guns. That includes cheap 1911's and SIGs, Glocks, Berettas, HK's etc. I do love a good semi auto though. I inherited a 1925 Colt government model 1911A1, C prefix. And a Kimber CST which I bought from a forum member here.
I own Rugers too. But when I want a quality handgun I buy a S&W, an older one!

John;)

Man, S&W 65's & 66's just are expensive around here.....Ruger "S" series are pricey also... seem's like prices are climbing on Gun Choker also....
but I like K size revolvers...just really never cared for L frame or GP's..i'd rather have a Med size 357 mag revolver and use 38 Spl. as practice ammo and 357 mag for other things...

Ditto. Now that most of the LEO turn-in guns have dried up folks ask and arm and a leg for their revolvers. Same gun that a guy would have been happy to get $300 out of a few years ago has an asking price of $500 now and the guy doesn't have any more into it and if anything he's shot more rounds through it so it should be worth even less.
