Some close up photos would help. Sight inserts appeared in several supposedly factory colors other than red back in the mid 1970's and yellow was one I remember seeing.
I would hold off on the letters until some pictures are posted and discussed.

There are kits available for the competent owner or gunsmith to install plastic ramps of almost unlimited colors. I did several jobs of replacing bright color inserts with black insert material and then cutting the usual serrations across the front sight target ramp including the plastic for competitive shooters that prefer ed the sight picture that all black gave over that of front sights with colored inserts.

Yes, the S&W factory has done yellow inserts on special order but they are not common and the only way to know if it is original is to get a factory letter. And the letter will only tell you if they shipped new that way, not if they were returned to the service department and done later.

I seem to remember The old catalog offering different color options. I THINK red, yellow, and white? Also the red square plastic dot on the square front sight. Maybe in the 3 colors also?
Gettin old sucks...

Not a 66 or 67 but a HP (1955) with a factory refinish & yellow insert.
seems like a lot of police wanted the yellow insert.

Once I get the letter back for my 629 I'll send in for the one for the 66. I wish they offer discounts for multiple

Factory would allow walk customers in the 1970's. Change your revolver's front sight insert while you waited in the rotunda. LEO price was $3.00 and colors were red, orange, yellow and white. You could even get coffee and a doughnut if you were polite.
