66 No Dash Questions **Pics Added**

I'll be looking at a 66 no dash w/ 4" barrel tomorrow. I guess it has the silver sights.

What year did Smith do away with the silver sights?

I know collectors like P&R guns, but is there any advantages to them?

I'll of course post pics if this falls into my hands. I still need to workout a price.

The stainless sights went away for LEO users shortly after the 66's introduction. Around 1973 IIRC the 66's had the blue/black rear sight assembly.

S&W refit the 66's already in inventory/service.

The P&R is indicative of higher quality build and more attention to detail, to me. For competition shooting I prefer the non recessed cylinders as it makes for easier/faster reloads.

Great revolver the 66. My 4" no dash is a factory high polish finish. Looks like bright nickel. Enjoy that 66 no dash! Regards 18DAI.

It's a 4kxxxx serial #. it also has a bright stainless finish. Some minor visible wear. Has the grips with the speed loader cut-out (not football). Possibly replaced? I offered $475. He's thinking it over.

Paid $500 for it. Ser#4K50xxx (1973). Grips are dated 1985. Who knows what happened to the originals? Came with a box of old.38 spl ammo, Gordon Davis Duty Holster and some speed loaders.

I just picked up this Model 66-2 in December for 4 bills and change, and it shoots like a charm. Someone has done an action job on it in the past and it is the equal of any revolver I own. I only wish I had acquired one sooner.

It was my very first LE revolver in 1971 purchased new through the dept. I carried it for about ten years and sold it to one of our officers to buy a 2.5"66. Wish I had kept it now. You will love it.

Yes, the stocks are from a slightly later gun, with the "speedloader" cutout. Nice find!

The pinning of a barrel is supposed to keep it secure under heavy recoil. Alledgely some would come unscrewed under continued use with full house loads. I've never fired more than a few max loads at a time in any of my revolvers... so couldn't say...

The recessed cylinder is an expensive process, which is usually discontinued after a period of time in production. I believe it makes for a more clean line, as you don't see the heads of cases when looking at the side of the firearm... Any practical use??? Unlikely that it could be considered stronger...
