I saw a 66 no dash unfired at a gunshow today. With box, papers and cleaning kit. Stainless steel sights $750. It seems a little high to me. What do you think?

Thanks, John

The barrel length is 4". I thought it was high too. He had a 63 that I really liked but he has $550 on it and you could see scuff marks on the barrel and cylinder. No box or anything.

If it was minty (I don't believe in this unfired BS)/very little to no cylinder marks with the box, tools and paperwork, I don't think it was overpriced. Of course, everyone would love to find such an animal for $400 and change. Too many of us are living in the past where such a gun would have been $300 - $400 (of course we were making a lot less money then too). This is a problem with us geezers. We remember the 'good ol days' when things were cheaper by today's standards but we forget we didn't have the amount of disposable income we enjoy today. The younger set listens to us and thinks their getting screwed unless they find a $700 gun for $400. Don't get me wrong. It's great if you find a real deal but don't keep fooling yourself thinking "am I getting hosed?". Everything else has gone sky-high so why shouldn't a minty precision made tool not produced anymore?

I've got a 4" 66 no dash that I paid $375 for some years ago. I guess I'd better hang on to it.

I bought my Model 66 new back in 1973. It cost me $175 and I was bummed because I had to pay full retail. The same year I bought a Model 29 4" after watching the movie "Dirty Harry" and was once again bummed because I had to pay the full retail of $202.50. How times change and how the dollar has been devalued!

I watched a NIB 66 no dash with 4" barrel, target stocks, and silver sights on Gunbroker that ended last week. Dealer said it was old stock and unfired. Looked brand new with all the paperwork, etc. I bid on it up to $500 but the winning bid went to $815 plus $30 shipping.

I saw an S&W ad in the paper; called, and had the owner hold on to it until I got there...Fast! It turned out to be a reasonably used (not abused) 4" 66 (no Dash) and about an easy $50 plus in leather ( Nice form-fit Holster, Matching speed loader pouch & 2 loaders) for $350..... for a "dull silver Model 19" I'd do it again, too. But, to me, the one you mentioned still sound a bit pricey... My personal rule is want a whole buncha things, Mainly different guns...watch the ads, ask around, and pretty soon I can check another off the list. Just be patient and aware, the deals are heading your way. I've done this quite a few times- the real trick is to get there fast, AND have the cash

I might have just got lucky, but I just picked up a 66 no dash 4 inch, black rear sights, red ramp front, with box and papers but no tools for $230 out the door. It wasn't unfired, but it sure hadn't been fired much. Found it at a local pawn shop, and he even let me put it on lay-away.

$750 sounds way too high for me, but I confess I have no idea about "collector value" on this particular gun. Wouldn't think it would be that much, though.

I passed on a 686 no dash today for $ 435. The reason being, it had no "M" stamped by the serial number. That is the proof that the gun was sent back to S&W after their re call on 586, and 686 no dash, and 1 dash. Thats not very well known but it should be. The re call is still in effect, and S&W will take up the cost of sending it back. Check with S&W.

Please forgive my ignorance, but can you please explain about the 586/686 recall?

Thanks in advance,

Dave

I have 2 model 66s. Both 4". First is a no dash F.H.P. gun ,I was in the store when the retired officer who carried the gun traded it in. They gave him $200. trade in and I paid $250. It needed a new cylinder stop and a good bit of cleaning ,but now is nice as can be.

My second is a 66-2, it is counterbored but not pinned. A transition gun from 1982. Clean and crisp for $349.00.

I'm not saying these deals are commonplace, but they can be had.

It all depends on how much time one has compared to funds. If you have the time to look, and hang around the shops, you will find the deals.
If time is valuable to you, and you have little to spare then you pay the price and get the gun.

Many persons these days are paying a premium for revolvers out of lack of time or patience.

Good luck negotiating your deal ,,AL

I bought a 66 no dash 4" with stainless rear sights last weekend for $400.00.I already had a 66 no dash 6" with black sights I paid $350.00 for a few months ago.I have seen two 2 1/2"s for sale in the last few weeks in the $450.00 to $475.00 range. In my opinion anything over $500.00 for a model 66 is just to much unless you feel you just got to have one. There are just to many out there to be had right now.Where I live 66's and 19's are as common as M&P's.
