I'm looking to get another .357 mag to go with my 686+ 2.5' and my 66 PC F-Comp 3". Not looking for something real fancy, just a good solid pre lock K or L frame. So after looking for 2 weeks I've found a 4' 686 no dash, a 4' 66-2, and a 6" 686+, I think its a -5. The 6" 686+ and the 66-2 are in real nice used condition, the 4" 686 looks like a LE turn in with some holster wear to the SS finish and no M mod. None have boxes or papers. 66-2 is $475 and has the factory target grips, 4" 686 is $490 with Houge grips, and the 6" 686+ is $550. A local gun shop has a 6" 686+ thats like new with the box and papers, but is going to hit $610 with tax. What seems like the best deal? I'm leaning toward the 66 or the 686+ but also want to keep the purchase under $500. Why under $500, because after selling my 696 and buying a 625 JM, thats what I have left to buy another S&W.

What do you plan to do with it? Shoot some and carry alot...the 66. Shoot a lot of magnums and carry some...the 686.
They're all stainless and can be polished up to look like new.
I'd hold them all and ask to dry fire them and see if one stands out.
Post pictures of the one you get.

I have previously owned a Model 19 (6") and shot it a good bit with full .357 magnum loads. I never had a problem with it but desired the durability of the 686 since I shot nothing but full loads in it. I eventually ended up with two 686's (a CS-1 with 4" barrel and a 686-something with 6" barrel). I am convinced that the S&W 686 is the best .357 available.

Just an opinion, of course, but I am happy with it.

YMMV

4" 66-2. Decent price on a superb revolver. I'd take it over your other choices, in a heartbeat.

K-frames point more naturally and handle quicker, for me. Good luck with your decision! Regards 18DAI.

Edited to add: I have shot, and will continue to shoot, any current factory made 357 load in my 66 without concern. I've yet to see one destroyed by factory ammunition, despite the internet! ;)
