669 9mm Help needed

I was at the relatives today. My brother in-law showed me his 669. The gun had a rounded trigger guard and one piece grips. With this model I thought it would have the 1 gen trigger guard and the three piece grips. The serial number was TBMxxxx. It had a red bar front sight and the expected rear sight that was drift adjustable. The "Made in the USA" stamping on the left side of the Slide appeared to have been done poorly. It looked like it was stamped twice slightly off register. The gun also had decocker/safety on both sides of the slide. Thought this model only had the decocker/safety on the left side that was held on with a phillips head screw from the right side.

The gun looked very much my my late model 6906 except for the sights.

IDK... but Im thinking it has aftermarket Pachmayer grips and some work done to smooth the trigger guard. The 669 should be a 2nd gen. compact aluminum alloy frame with three piece grips, square guard and double stack mag. But sometimes S&W model numbers dont make sense.

The grips were factory S&W one piece. They are the same as on my other S&Ws. The trigger guard was also factory. There was no rework to make it a rounded trigger as I could tell.

I will guess transition gun as well or a custom. It could be a 669 slide on a 6906 frame (which brings me back it being a transition gun). I will mention that I had a gunsmith round the trigger guard on a Bersa once and you would never have known it was not the way it came from the factory. But that would not explain the delrin grips.

I think you need to have your brother in law snap some pics so you can post them.

Could you post pictures of it for us?

TBM is definately a 2nd gen 669 serial number, not a 3rd gen, so it should have the squared guard. The ambi lever on a 669 (or transitional) would be held on with a Phillips head screw where the 3rd gen would have the spring plunger.

There is another possible explanation. A 669 could have been sent back into S&W damaged and they put the 669's serial number on a 6906 frame and returned it.

(SAME HERE) Thought this model only had the decocker/safety on the left side that was held on with a phillips head screw from the right side.

So as stated, I have this same exact version S and W Model 669. Has anyone found out anything additional about this gun. I keep hearing Transitional but that still doesnt cover all of these uniquities. Any help would be appreciated.

If it had a square guard I'd say transition model, but with the round guard I'd guess a 669 that had a frame defect that S&W replaced at a later date. A call to S&W with the serial number should confirm it either way.

That definitely seems to be a 2nd gen slide on a 3rd gen frame.
Look at the two red dots 'under' the manual safety lever.
I have seen people try to round a squared guard but by the way the trigger guard curves into the frame (not sharp angles), that is a 1990s frame.

Does not look to be a transitional to me. More likely that the original frame was damaged and S&W replaced the frame and stamped the original serial number on it.

I appreciate the knowledgeable replies folks. Thank you for your time.

My only question that is still got me thinking is the fact that both my gun, as well as the original posters, have the same EXACT specs. And when you combine the fact that we both have sloppy jobs on the MADE IN USA Stamp on the slide it is just really kind of hard to grasp how two firearms could be duplicated like this.

Based on these facts, if we go with the suggestion of a repair situation we would have to assume that two firearms, both had cracked or damaged frames, and then wound up at S & W for Repair. Now that would explain how they both received new Gen 3 Frames, but how do we explain that they both left repair with the same Gen 2 Slides, both with the sloppily stamped slide (MADE IN USA)? That leads me to believe that both these weapons were manufactured at the same location or part of the same manufactured lot. (The odds are incredible any other way, I would think)

Obviously, the solution is going to be to call S & W and stop my guessing. But you have to admit, it is kind of a unique situation, being we are dealing with not one but two 669s with the same exact situation..

My first post, 669 input

I also have a strange 669. In trying to find out more, I found
this thread. So, it is marked 669, has round trigger guard, one piece factory grips, no half cock. Serial prefix is TAH. I called S&W and was told it was made in 1996. I just bought this pistol yesterday, and am happy I did, but am not sure what it is, other than a fine addition to my collection.
