Hi folks,

I'm not blaming anyone but myself for this one, I knew full well what I was getting into. :D

This may be the roughest gun I've ever owned...with the best trigger. It's lighter and smoother than my PC gun, as well as a massaged k-frame.

The top strap has zero evidence of flame-cutting - just a little mark, really.

The rest...well, have a look.

My buddy offered up Pigpen as a name, and I think it fits.

Someone dragged that one around the block. Lord...it hit everything but the bullseye! Amazing the hammer spur is still attached. Im a sucker for unloved Smiths..but that one would have to be cheap..even the Pachys are beat!

Pretty sure that when out a car window and skidded down a street.

Have you made certain the strain screw is fully seated?

Good name. Nice thing about a beater is you'll use it without worry. They have a way of becoming favorites... ;)

That's a beater worth shooting. Take the rough off the front sight and bang away.

I had a 60 I let a friend borrow for a camping trip. He had it loaded with snake shot and was going rock climbing. It went about 400' (he said) down a rock face in eastern WV. My gunsmith shot-peened it and straightend the crane. It still shot great. I sold it to the friend after he paid to fix it.

At least you don't have to worry about any modifications changing the originality or collectability. You can do whatever you want with that 681 conscious free!

Looks like a Police gun to me. Grips and frame are subject to many hits on the steering wheel and seatbelts. A wrestling match on the street with a perp has launched a few out of the holster and down the sidewalk. I say it says PD to me. We were posting at the same time. Number under cylinder is another clue.

That's likely a good call, and the wear on the Pachs suggest a long stint in the holster.

Yep, that revolver has had a hard life. Not much use, but lots of abuse, could very well have ridden in the holster of a LEO or two.

I have a 681 that was an Ohio Highway Patrol gun.

In pretty good condition.

Looks like someone drug that one down a driveway.

A blued Aristocrat rib and you have adjustable sights on a bead blast finish stainless gun. Mine shoots like a laser, if you can hold the barrel up, the gun is as steady as a rock.

Added photo, M686 and M681 with sight rib.

Any way of cleaning that up or is it too rough to even try? Hurts to see it in this condition, given that the 681 is a "near-grail" gun for me.:(

Well that is the definition of a truck gun. IMHO clean it up as well as you can and shoot the heck out it. I can't see spending a bunch of $$ on the gun trying to restore it.

With the markings on the side of the gun, at one time it could very well have been a department issued firearm. However, I can't imagine that it left any agency in that condition. I cannot fathom ANY police agency administrator that would tolerate a firearm being in that kind of condition. It is much more likely that the damage you see was done after it was traded in, sold, lost or stolen from the department. That is a true case of 'road rash'.

I can't just leave it like that, just not sure how many cans of worms I feel like opening.

Cleaning up the sights is a must, may just bead-blast top rib and call it a day after that.

Suggestions?

Sell it to me cheap and let your worries float away!

Honestly, I wouldn't change a thing. It has great character, and none of the chew affects function -- even on the sights.

As long as it's mechanically correct, I'd clean it, oil it, throw preferred stocks on and shoot it worry-free.

PATX - shoot it first. I am in the camp that if it aint broken leave it be. It is what it is. Lipstick on a pig.
My buddy's got a SW victory that he got off auction. Looks like hell but puts all 6 in one hole at 15 yds.
So its ugly and beat up...
my truck, my dog and my best friend are all haggard and worn.
I wouldnt change none of it and would miss them if I did.

I think I would clean up as much of the damage as I could, especially around the front sight and then have it bead blasted. Fit a new set of Pachmyars to it and it would make an ideal truck gun. I wouldn't spend much time, effort or cash trying to get all the dings out, just the most egregious damage.
