I have a 686-1 snubbie boxed and papered that I was thinking of trading for this 19-5 nickel.. Apparently the owner sent it to Keystome Arms to be polished by a person named Mark. Comes with the ram's horn grips from Maston Stag and the original stocks. Problem is my 686-1 is complete as it came from the factory. The 19-5 is gun only. At a investment standpoint, would you do the trade???? Don't usually see the 686-1 around being complete. Although the 19-5 is super nice. Pics of the 686-1 are in another thread I posted earlier.

Which one do like you better? Neither of them is very special as a collectible.

I think the 686 is a keeper. If you were able to get what you wanted with as much value as the 686, that would be a different story. Bone grips, nickel finish etc would cause me to back away to start with. The fact that it got a trigger job from someone that nobody ever heard of is also a turn off. Good luck finding what you want.

I wouldnt trade away the 686. You have box, papers that could give it more interest if you ever go straight sale.
Just my humble opinion.
Jim

I agree with jimbo728. That 2.5 inch 686 with box and docs would be very difficult to find again. Buy a 19 and keep the 686. But, it's certainly your gun and your call. Good luck.

I agree with sodacan. The fact you're even asking is proof of interest. Boxes are overrated, anyway, especially for a non-exclusive or rare gun. Which one do YOU prefer is the question! You won't likely go wrong either way.

I gotta agree with the above about keeping the 686, but that 19 is sweet!

I'm sorry, but that 686 doesn't look polished at all to me. Kinda beat up a little, if anything.

I've got both snubbie's side by side. A 19-5 Nickel no box and a 686 no dash with box. Love both but hands down I'd trade off my 19 before the 686.

Bottom line, the 686 is a better gun. Keep your gun and shop around for the 2 1/2" 19 if you gotta have one. I'd look for a dash 4 or earlier though. Much more collectible. ;)

From an investment standpoint only, the 19 could be of higher value. But from all other standpoints the 686 is better IMO.

If you want a 19 for collecting, find one that is pinned and recessed.

I don't think either is very collectible, box or no. But Smith revolvers are like potato chips. You WILL end up owning many. Resistance is futile. If you like the 19 buy it.

The 19 and 686 are both very nice revolvers. However, for general use and especially if that usage includes hot .357 Magnum loads, the 686 is superior. Keep the 686. It is worth more as it sits compared to the 19. JMHO. Sincerely. bruce.

I have decided to keep the 686. The 19-5 was a nice gun but I think I would have a hard time finding another 686 in the current configuration. Thanks to all for confirming my real feelings. Sometimes when you question something, there is usually a reason. I found that out today.

I like nickle and bone grips. I don't like 2.5in L Frames.

Ergo , *for me* , I would enjoy the M19 more.

What do I know? Just ask my wife. Personally, I would keep the 686, even though the 19 looks cool. I think that the original gun w/papers would appeal to more people.
You need to figure what is right for YOU! Not an easy decision sometimes. Bob

I don't know beans about the collector's aspect of your possible trade. But I would stay with the 686. The 686 will do anything the 19 will do and more. You don't have to baby it in regards to .357 ammunition and it's built to use. I'd be afraid to carry such a pretty gun like the 19 you displayed. A little scotch brite and the 686 is ready to go.
As stated by others my opinion is free so take it for what it's worth.
Good luck on your decision.

I do not buy ANY guns for investment.

I keep my guns for a long time

I know whatever gun I own will sell for more in 10-20-30 years than I paid for it.

The few hundred dollars difference between the two decades down the road is of no concern to me.

Which one I would enjoy more for those decades is of concern to me.

Keep the one you like better, not the one a batch of strangers are telling you will be worth more decades from now.

4330Inrout is right on the money. Show piece versus the utilitarian. If your going to carry the M19 it is going to require a properly lined holster or it is not going to look as it does in the photo very long. I just purchased a NIB 686 3" for the very purpose of having a gun I can shoot as a utilitarian piece. No muss no fuss, leave the queen at home on the shelf. The M19 does have some character, that's for sure.

It prob didnt get a trigger job from Marc @ Keystone, it most likely got literally what the OP said. Polished, as in the nickel was polished to nice high luster. Marc Mitchell, Keystone Arms and Keystone polishing are all Marc's and he is very well known in the Colt community. Matter of fact, if anybody here wanted to get their Stainless gun polished to a mirror finish, Keystone does a terrific job.
