Your 2.5" 686 is the snubby variety; it's built on S&W L-frame, introduced in the early '80s as a middle ground between the lighter K and the heavier N frames -- something that could handle and absorb stout loads but not be too demanding for all day carry.
It's .357 Magnum ready, and fine to shoot .38 Specials in, too.
The stocks (grips) you describe sound like factory combats -- nice indeed, and much sought after around here. Post pics and we can confirm.

If you don't post photos, describe the sights and provide the serial number. You can replace the last two or three digits with Xs and someone can still provide the approximate manufacture date.

You have honey of a carry gun there. (A touch on the big/heavy side but do able.)
Haworth covered the gun pretty well and if could post the first part of the SN like Goblin said there are many on here that have a SCSW that could tell you more on the history of it.

Congratulations on your new purchase. I have a 686 like yours and it is my favorite S&W revolver.... a good combination of size, weight and strength. Mine has the best trigger of my Smiths and shoots double action easily and predictably. The 2-/2 inch barrel makes it a good carry size and can digest a steady diet of 357s if you are up to it. I shoot 38s in mine at the range. It is quite accurate, too. Enjoy! You've got one of Smith's finest revolvers.
