686-3 picked up with numbered box. Serial number BHB9216. Traded a Remington Model 51 380 box and papered plus 69.00. I think the cylinder release knob is wrong. Seems it is a later shape being angled vs flat. Also what year was this produced. Gun is clean and grips are great. Thanks for any help.

As far as I know, that is not a S&W release, it looks to be an after market made by California Works.....or somthing like that.
I'm sure if that is not correct, someone will come along state so.

It looks like someone added a California Competition Works latch. Dillon Precision in Phoenix sells them (part # H55-18604).

Probably early 1991 production, and it should have the standard checkered stainless latch, not relieved on the bottom or MIM.

It's not the original one but its looks . They cost allot more than the original so it's not a bad add-on in my opinion.

Looks like someone has made their 686 "tacticool" by replacing the thumbpiece with one intended for competition. IMO, that's a bit out of place on a 6 inch 686 because they are too long for most action shooting venues and too muzzle heavy for good results in rapid fire DA shooting. BTW, as you might guess, I'm a bit old fashioned when it comes to accessorizing a revolver and I prefer the Classic style thumbpiece, not the ducktail new style or any of the competition versions.

Brownells does list a thumbpiece for the 686 in stock, unfortunately they aren't specific if it's the Classic style or the new ducktail style, so a call would be in order before purchasing it. Following is a link to that part.

Personally, I like the 6" 686 for competitions such as ICORE, USPSA, steel, etc. I think it's the perfect length because you can make major easily, get a long sight radius, and holster selection is not a problem.

Midway sells what you need. They've got pictures and descriptions. Make sure you get the stainless and not the blue.

mitchsnap - if you want a factory original one, send me a pm with your mailing address and I'll throw it in the mail on Tuesday.
We'll call it an Independence Day Personal Karma :)

That's one of the Ed Brown oversized thumbpieces; the California Competition Works thumbpieces are slightly differently shaped, wider and more rectangular-shaped.

Yes I did check out the California model and it is different. Why would someone change the thumbpiece from the original? This gun is really nice so I don't understand the change. Maybe there are some other mods that I should be aware of. Not too familiar with the 686. Just used to own one. Sold it. Missed it cause it shot so great. That's why I acquired this one.

Yeah I know. It really doesn't look right. Didn't S&W use a similiar style in the later 686's?
