686-3 Yoke screw help.........

Would some one be good enough to post a picture of a 686-3 yoke screw.I read that this model is suppose to have the new set up with spring and plunger but mine has neither nor does it look like there is room for either.Also was looking at some pictures of some other 686-3s and looks like some have bigger yoke screw heads than mine.My side plate screws are all the same size looking down at the side plate.All the screws I have looked at from Midway and Brownells are conflicting for a 686-3 they advertise, some have a flat tops and some look akin to a dull point, and they both say 686-3.Mine is rounded off.I don't know if its worn or altered or what ever.Any help appreciated......Regards Peter

You cannot mistake an old yoke screw from a current yoke screw. The current screw has a plunger with a point on it that fits into a "V" groove on the yoke. The older screw was a flat base screw that fits into a wider flat base groove on the yoke.

While the new style yoke screw threads are larger than the solid style screw the diameter of the screw head is only very slightly larger. If you haven't removed the screw and examined it I fail to see how you could know if it isn't the new style!

Don't depend on parts catalog pictures of parts to make an identification, they aren't always accurate!

I have taken off the screw Mr Gun Smith since 1961.... and the end of the screw looks like a half moon and there is no spring or plunger.Thanks for the effort.I suppose I will have to figure it out on my own with a bit of trail and error. I have heard on some other posts that although the so called new retention system came with the 686-3 in 1988 that it was not implemented on all the guns till 1991,now if that's true or not I don't know....I will keep on trucking with this.........

Post # 11 in the thread below shows a photo of the old style and the new style yoke and screw designs....... the new style retention screw has a spring loaded plunger.

Is this a headache worth $4.. buy one of each if you can't figure it out by looking at the yoke cut out on your gun, you will end up with a spare for the other type...end of story

There are only two different screws, new and old style. It has to be one or the other. It would have been helpful to post a photo of what you are seeing.

You didn't say you had removed the screw the first time! How was I supposed to know that? Or did you just have an overwhelming urge to be snotty?

My apologies Sir bad form on my part...I am just going to buy both screws as the other Gentleman suggested as its less head aches than drawing out and making something complex when it does not have to be.
