686+ 4" NO RIFLING!! Please help

Even smooth bore revolver would shoot well enough at 15 yards (S&W fires one round out of every other cylinder for three shots total before it leaves the factory).
I imagine this is not only totally possible, but not even terribly unlikely when one considers some of the oddballs that have come out of Mass these last few decades.

NOTHING is too hard...

Nothing is too hard to believe nowadays. The gun would still shoot w/o rifling, just no spin.

Check your spam or junk mail box. The label will be in an email with some instructions on how to ship a gun. If they really didn't send it, call them back and tell them you are serious and to send a label. They WILL make this good and probably expedite it, too. Stuff usually takes me about 10 days turnaround. however, non warranty repairs and custom work can take a long time.

After giving it some thought I think it may be a good idea to first contact the shop that sold you the pistol. Since it qualifies as an AOW it may have been (at least technically) an illegal purchase since no proper paperwork was submitted. The shop may prefer to take care of the issue "in house".

In the late 70's I purchased a brand new Model 34. After close inspection, found it was a true smooth bore with not a hint of rifling. S&W immediately replaced the gun with an apologetic "red faced" letter. So it does happen, though rarely; send it back:o:o:)

And just like Oldster's Model 34, I saw a NIB Model 19
without rifling at a gun store in Arlington Heights,
IL. This was around 1985. S&W immediately
ordered the gun's return because of legal ramifications.

I remember posting about this event in another thread
probably five or six years ago.

OK, lets get back to expressing shock over
slanted barrels.

BATFE book specifies that if a non NFA dealer comes into possession of an NFA item they shall immediately notify the local BATFE.
A (former) employee of our LGS unknowingly accepted a full auto Czech Skorpion machine pistol on consignment.
Upon notification, local BATFE replied "what makes you think its NFA?".
Took them several weeks to figure it out.
It was eventually seized, and the guy who brought it in was given a pass. Story was it was found in the effects of a deceased relative.

This happened to a buddy of mine back in the late 1970s. He purchased a Colt/Sauer hunting rifle. It was a very expensive rifle, and came with a test target from the factory showing a very tight group shot from the bench. My buddy tried to sight it in at the range and couldn't even get a round on the paper. He asked me for help and the first thing I did was open the bolt and look down the barrel - it was smooth as a shot glass. I told him he should contact the factory, but not to return it until he got the deal he thought was fair. As I recall, the factory was pretty frantic to get him to return the rifle, and they eventually replaced it - this time, with a rifle, rather than a smooth bore.

Regards,

Dave

"A pistol or revolver having a barrel with a smooth bore designed or redesigned to fire a fixed shotgun shell..."

I think the only thing that makes this factory screwup technically illegal is that .357 shotshells exist.

Here's the only flaw in the paranoia that seems to be hitting some of you folks:
It was never designated AOW by the ATF. It is still, and has always been, a HANDGUN, and whatever problems that exist with it are not crimes for the owner. This is like saying that when one removes the barrel from their S&W revolver they have an illegal weapon and must immediately contact the BATFE and S&W and their local priest and cry "mea culpa".
It would still fire without the barrel, and has no rifling.
If this particular 686 left Springfield without rifling in the barrel, it's a matter of product condition after the sale, and should be covered by S&W's warrantee. They will make it right. You folks panicking about his legal ownership of this flawed handgun are the same people who told me I had a machine gun when my Colt 1911 was doubling from time to time due to a worn sear.

New to forums i apoligieze in advance. Recent i purchased a NIB 686 + 4". It has absolutely zero rifling! Im not new to guns just wheelies. I called smith and pretty much she didnt believe me and said they would send a return shipping label. That was almost two weeks ago and havent recieved it yet. I purchased this over ruger cause i wanted a superior product. Is this what i should expect from S&W? I know shame on me ( and LGS) fpr not noticing it when i purchased it but im lokking for knicks and scratches and to see how she lines up. What im not looking for is to see if my pistol is legal to possess. Just curious if anyone has heard of similar situations and any advice on how to get it fixed in a timely manner? Please and thank you

WELCOME TO THE FORUM, Daryl17....

IT IS A FREQUENT LAMENT OF MINE, THAT INCREASINGLY, THE RESPONSIBILITY FOR QUALITY CONTROL AT S&W, HAS BEEN SHIFTED FROM THE MANUFACTURER, TO THE END USER............

IMHO---THIS IS ONE OF THE MOST EGREGIOUS EXAMPLES THAT HAS BEEN REPORTED, ON OUR FORUM---OTHER THAN REPEAT RETURNS FOR THE VERY SAME PROBLEM, ON THEIR HIGHLY TOUTED, AND VERY PRICEY, PC GUNS.......

BEST WISHES FOR SPEEDY AND COMPLETE RESOLUTION OF THIS PROBLEM, ON YOUR FIRST GO-ROUND, WITH S&W..........

HERE'S A HEADS UP---BE SURE THAT YOU CHECK FOR PROPER ALIGNMENT OF THE REPLACEMENT BARREL, AND ANY EVIDENCE OF FRAME CRACKING, ETC........

Daryl17,

I can not say you are wrong but are you familiar with the polygonal appearance that some of S&W's electrical chemical machined (ECM) rifled barrels have? We have had multiple threads started by members who thought those normal barrels had no rifling. While S&W's old broach cut rifling had square corners, at best their ECM rifling has rounded corners. The ones that look polygonal can be mistaken for having no rifling. They are legal and with loads the gun likes shoot well .

If I use my 1911 shot out barrel am I manufacturing a shotgun?
If I use snakeshot in my rifled 686 have I manufactured a shotgun?

There is no common sense about this and laws seem to change weekly. Intentional gray area so DA's can make examples anywhere they can.

OP. +1 on the EDM rifling. It surely looks different than cut rifling on first appearances and depending on your eyesight, cant be seen at all

It remains an illegal gun.
Don't sell it, don't keep it, get S&W to send you a label or return to the place you bought it.
