Hello everyone, I currently own a 686-4 plus with a 6" barrel and it's a fine revolver. I've been in the market for sometime now, for the same gun with a 4" barrel. Now on to the questions, are these revolvers rare? I've read somewhere the -4 was a four year run, but I'm not sure about the 7 shot. Is there a better 7 shot pre-lock smith that's in stainless with a 4" barrel? Should I just be patient and find a 686-4 with a 4"?

I believe the dash 4 plus was made in 1996 and 97.

I bought a dash 4 plus with a 4" barrel on this forum a few weeks ago for $650. I feel fortunate. I hunted hard for it. Said Ill take it about five mins after it was posted and he had lots of people contacting with backup offers.

Do the same and you can find one. Check gunsamerica too. It's a fun search because its a relatively rare piece but not crazy expensive. I was looking for pre-lock 627s, then realized they're out of my league for now.

All 686s are great guns. Dash-no dash, IL-pre IL what ever. If you want a four inch buy a new 686-6 or whatever dash they're at now. If you want a dash 4 just to match your current 686, they're out their on the auction sites for decent prices.

Nice find, I will admit, I've gotten caught up the python craze as of late. Bought 5 of them, now there getting out of my league. I will just need to put the time in and find one. For a reasonable price.

I really want it to match my 6". When I really like a gun, I normally buy the same guns in both 4" and 6" barrel lengths.

I also recently purchased a 686+ Dash 6 6" and just picked up a 686 Dash 4 4".

I've got two 686-6 Plus 7-shot revolvers..one is the 6" barrel but my favorite is a 3" RB with factory night sites with box and docs..try to find one of those..I had a 686 6-shot 2.5" barrel Lew Horton issue from the 1990's that I let get away from me.. like the 3" better because it has the full-length ejection rod..

686-4 Plus

The 686-4 is one of the most sought after 686s It is the last production model 686 that mim parts were not used in a standard 686. There are many of them out there but people are holding onto them. It is also the 1st of the 7 shot to come out and the 1 st of the 686s that were drilled and tapped for a red dot or scope.
Be patient and wait for one to come around. It will be worth it. Good Luck in your search.

Like the Rev King said, "Be patient, you will find what you want at a price you can afford." The Forum Classifieds and GunBroker are your friends. I found 3 affordable S&Ws in the condition I wanted by being patient.

Not every S&W is $750 to $1,000, nor will the one you want be $350 either. Patience and good luck are the keys to success.

What I really like about the 686-4s are not only they the last made with forged hammers and triggers, I like the round butt. I traded a -3 to a fellow (thanks again ED) forum member for this -4.

I'm jealous :D

These things are harder to find then I thought they would be, still came up with nothing.

You're welcome, John. I'm glad you are enjoying my old gun as much as I am yours. Its square butt allows me to use the nicely figured checkered target stocks I have hoarded. I just put a darker, more figured set on it yesterday that really pop against the stainless finish and I have a Millett rear sight for it scheduled to arrive today.

Ed, post a photo with the darker stocks when you can, I imagine it looks great.

This holster for it should be here in a week or two.

Rubber has one "look" - wood can have many and nice old-school factory "woodies" are becoming scarcer all the time.

Those grips are beautiful and I like the target hammer and trigger. As much as I like rubber grips there is something special about wood grips. That is one stunning 686.

Taking this in perhaps a different direction...try your local pawn shops.

Seems LOTS of folks on GBroker are hoping that whatever they're selling is now a winning Powerball ticket. I found after a lucky search a very nice shape -4, 4" this month, for the princely sum of $450.00 OTD. Mine is a 6 shooter. Even if you don't see what you're looking for in the case, ask the staff, they will know what is about to come out due to non payment of the pawn loans. Have found LOTS of juicy Smith's and Colts this way.

They ARE out there but locally may be the way to go. Seems the major part of the current craze is anything hi cap. Leaves more vintage (and just as deadly :) ) steel for the rest of us.

Good luck in your search. As previously noted, a tad of patience can pay BIG dividends in finding exactly what you want.

I just got back from my weekly run of pawn/gun shops in my area and found nothing really. Although one of them had a ruger mark II in stainless with the 5.5 bull barrel. Still thinking about it, but I already have two . patience is key. They do not have any Colt or Smiths of interest, otherwise they would have came home with me today.
