Hello all,

I have in mind to join IDPA and want to change my 686-6 to 4" (to pinch a penny). My first question, would this make my revolver able to compete ... fit in the box? Could I make the revolver just the same as factory accurate by doing this? Would I detrament the value of my revolver. I will obviously keep the 6" barrel to replace in the future.

Tell me what you think.

I think you nuts.
Is this a new 686 or an older pre-lock with hammer attached firing pin?
You have to buy the barrel and have a gunsmith put it in index it, set the sights. IT looks like you will be pinching pennies as you pay the gunsmith.
With IDPA you are going to be do a lot of dumping and reloading with a 6 gun.
I suggest you look at a decent semi-auto for IDPA.

Just sell your gun and buy a 4". Sell it to a private party and buy used from private party and you likely won't be out much money additionally, if any. Certainly a lot less than re-barreling.

A 4" revolver will not fit in the IDPA box. However, that is ok as revolvers aren't required to like autos are.

Definitely shoot a revolver in IDPA! It's easily the most fun one can have at a match!

That's the right thing to do - or better yet, just keep your 6-inch gun and buy a nice 4-incher to go along with it. It doesn't make economic sense the switch barrels unless you can do the work yourself. You'll have the cost of a barrel plus the gunsmith's charge to switch it. As to accuracy, if the job is done correctly, the 4-inch gun would likely be just as accurate as the gun with its original 6-inch barrel.

I looked at re-barreling my 6" 686-1 but ended up trading it, plus 100 beans, for a 4" 686-4+. I was ecstatic with the deal and the 686-4+.

I agree, a 4" 686 is a standard IDPA revolver for SSR. It'd be better to spend your money on a trigger job, ammo, a good holster, a couple of speed loaders and speed loader pouches.
