I have a 686+7 shot that I would like to convert to 6 shot so that I can shoot it in IDPA Stock Service Revolver class. Can I just order a new cylinder (6 shot) or does it have to go back to the factory? Thanks for replies!

686+ Conversion

jt1- I read your pm (thanks for that) but could not get a pm reply to work. Mine is a 686-6 (It has the lock, MIM parts, etc). I'm thinking I would prefer to just buy new parts so that I can go back and forth if I need to. I bought it in the first place years ago as a "pin gun" but have gotten away from pin shoots in favor IDPA, which is why I want to convert to 6 shot. If pin shoots become appealing again, then maybe back to 7 shot. So, my question still stands: what do I need to do to convert?

I'm not a gunsmith.
Considering that you need more parts than the cylinder, like the star, and you need it fitted to your present hand if you want to switch back and forth, I'd say you need a very good revolver smith.

With the backlog for such smiths, the S&W factory seems an attractive option to me.

I have a 686 Pro Series SSR and I am HAPPY (-: I just thought a backup 686 would be prudent. 'nough said, I'll drop the conversion idea!

You need a complete cylinder assembly fitted to your gun. Call S&W get the price and then decide if it's better to buy another gun. You can go through the headache and find all the parts yourself then find a smith to do the work but it usually doesn't save you much time or money this route. -GL-
