I have a 686-6 (new in ~2013) with a 6" barrel. If I wanted a new 4" barrel put on (I don't want it cut down) is that something SW would do as custom work? If not, can I get a new 4" that a qualified gunsmith could do the work?

Thanks!

S&W used to do such things and an email to them would cost you nothing. Otherwise, either find a good gunsmith or sell/trade the 6" 686 and buy a 4" 686.

Contact S&W first. It is a service that they definitely offered in the past for a fairly reasonable price (last I saw was $100 + shipping to them, but that was back in 2018).

Otherwise, the basic 6 shot, 4" 686 has been as low as $650 at PSA lately. They must've bought up some inventory that a distributor wrote off.

Recently had my 6” 686 rebarreled with a 4” barrel. By the time you buy the barrel and have it mounted, machined so that it clocked correctly on the frame, have the forcing cone milled to give the correct BC gap, etc., you’ll be just a couple hundred dollars short of buying a new gun set up the way you want it. I did it because my gun had sentimental value and I wanted to be able to put it back to it’s original condition.
