686 Competitor Question

I have a new 686-6 Competitor and would like to know if anyone makes a shorter set screw for holding the weights/spacers. I'd like to run it without either but don't like the idea of leaving another hole unplugged. I'm thinking a shorter set screw with either a drop of oil or loctite is in order. Any suggestions or experiences?

I'd take the existing set screw to a hardware store and ask the guy if he has a shorter one (or look yourself). I don't thing the size and pitch are anything exotic.

The question is: are there threads in the frame up at the front? The existing set screw has the threads all the way at the back. If the threads are only at the back how would you get a shorter set screw to work?

Do you know the thread size of the hole you need to fill? Brownells and other suppliers sell what are called hex head plug screws. You may be able to find them at your hardware store. Take the screw with you to verify/compare thread size. Might have to install with a litlle blue loctite or clear nail polish on the threads so the plug won't work itself loose. It would still be removeable with your hex wrench.

Thanks, guys. I figured it to be an easy fix, common sense really. I'll try the hardware store and if nothing else I can have it sized and then order the hex head plugs through Brownell's.

@Kernel Crittenden ... The frame is not threaded, one of the 'weights' is recessed. That's why there's 5 'weights' and only 4 'spacers' ... that first weight must be used.
