686 Cylinder assembly swap

Can a 7 shot cylinder assy. out of a 4" Model 686 Mountain Gun be simply interchanged with a 6 shot cylinder out of a 2 1/2" Model 686 without any other parts change or gunsmithing and still have BOTH revolvers function correctly ? ?

I'd expect not. If for no other reason than the ratchets are individually fitted to a specific weapon (old style).

Sometimes you get lucky. Sometimes they require only adjusting the endshake. Try it and see.

If you also swap the extractor star and extractor rod assembly you would have a pretty good chance it will be O.K.
