686 Fans: Should I go new or wait for a pre-lock?

During my last trip to Lawrenceville over T-giving I saw a couple of pre-lock 686 revolvers for far less than new. I say hold out if the pre-lock is a big deal to you. They are out there and at a relative bargain.

I don't think the lock makes a particle's worth of difference when it comes to function. I've got a 686-6, complete with lock, and it is among the best shooters of the several revolvers that I own, pre- and post-lock. As far as esthetics are concerned, however, that's a personal choice. As I've said, I've got 'em pre- and post-lock and I'm unaffected by it. But, others feel differently and that's their right.

I have 2 686+s with the IL locks and I have not had on problem with the 2 revolvers at all. All though I wish they both had fixed sights but,oh well,I have had them both since 97 and my 2.5 inch is my ccw gun. My 3 semi-auto Glocks and Taurus PT 1911 are all safe queens for the past 2 years. rz625-8 Might have my 3 semis up for sale soon.

I don't think the lock makes any difference in the 686 one way or the other. I have had them both ways and liked them fine. You might find a 686 with a lock with a better action than one without. Hard to tell. If you can wait, why not? Because they might not be available for a long time. I would only avoid the locks on guns that are not steel.
