686 Front of cylinder is black

Soften it up with a little Hoppes #9 while cleaning the bore. Then take it off with a tiny amount of Flitz on a patch. That's how we always got our 686's ready for inspection at the Academy.

It is gonna get black if you shoot it-period. What doesn't come off with the usual after shooting cleaning with Hoppe's and a few swipes of a bronze bore brush- stays. Ain't gonna hurt anything-plus those little black carbon circles around the charge holes lets the bad guy looking down the muzzle of the gun that you have at least shot the darn thing and not just bought it at Academy and still have the first 6 rounds of that box of ammo you purchased with the gun in it.:D

I use Ballistol , spray it on , wipe it off , YE-HAW ! it sparkles

Flitz works fine. as does Mother's mag wheel polish, and probably a dozen other polishes. I prefer one of the lead removal cloths available at any gun store. They run $5 or $6, do an excellent job on stainless guns (will take the blueing off of carbon steel) and can be cut into patches to do barrels and inside cylinders.
Since these polishing cloths and compounds are abrasive...wouldn't it be detrimental to the rifling to use these for cleaning bores?
