I currently have a 686 that has the Hogue rubber finger groove grips on it.

I have really big hands though and the grips are to short in circumference to keep my thumb out of the cylinder latch and I have to really cramp my trigger finger up to get the middle of the first pad on the trigger when shooting single action.

A buddy of mine had a L frame that he had put Hogue X-frame grips on. That grip completely covers the back strap of the revolver. It felt better to me because it filled my hand out a little better and kept my thumbs away from the latch while making my trigger finger more comfy on the SA trigger.

Does anybody have any suggestions for a wooden grip that covers the back strap like the x-frame grip does? I would also prefer not to have finger grooves.

Show me some pics if you have any.

I have Badger Oversize - where in TX - am in Houston and can show you if you wish

I am positive that Nill makes a grip that would perfectly suit your needs. These cover the backstrap:

So do these:

Oh sweet. Nill has so many options! The only thing I see is that they offer those type grips in large and extra large. Given that I like the size of the standard x-frame grips, do you think I would fit their large or extra large size better on my l-frame?

The X-Frame will fit your gun, and I know because I put them on a friends gun and he shoots it all the time.

The choices of grips is very impressive and the quality is certainly obvious, the print is very small so I failed to see any prices associated with the offered styles. How do I determine what I will have to pay for a particular grip style?

The catalog does not show prices. For prices, you need to go to their website: http://www.nill-griffe.com/

Once there, click on the "United States" link, then do a product search: Products -> Product search.

In terms of ordering, you can either order direct, or order (or special order) through their US distributor, MacTec Enterprises. See: http://mactec-militaryarms.com/nill_grips.html

For the shipment that MacTec Enterprises is expecting to receive at the end of May, the deadline for orders is May 8th.

I second the positive comments about Nills. I have extra large hands (I can palm a basketball) and I've put Nills on my 686. They're the most comfortable grips I own. Another possibility if your gun is a square butt is the old style Smith & Wesson square butt targets. I have them on my 617, my 66, and my 27. I find them to be excellent for my oversize hands.

Stevi, Sounds like we have similar hands, I have been able to palm a basket ball since like 8th grade

So did you get the Large Nills or the Extra Large Nills?

Im just trying to get an idea of how these things are sized. My dad has an old 19 with the target grips and they work allright. But my 686 is a round butt.

Does anyone make a grip that mimics the feel of the old square butt target grips but still fits the round butt L frame while still covering the backstrap thus providing for a little more reach to the trigger?

Really the stock Hogues feel all right around the bottom of the grip. The problem that i have with them is that the distance between the web of my thumb and my trigger finger is too short with these gips.
