Hi, I do not know how much they are actually worth. I do know they are part of the dash 5 series with the MIM parts but pre lock. There is one on gunsameric going for $695.00 I would not think that it would be worth close to that...It atleast looks good in its pics...Please dont ask me to post where it is as this violates the forum rules.

Never fired except by factor? Box, papers, etc.?

Here's my track on the gun. (Blue Book doesn't distinguish the MG from any other 686P). There was a price war on a couple a while ago on Aution Arms, I think it was> I've only found two this year. I wasn't looking all that hard but, still, two makes for a scarce year.

Smith & Wesson 686-5 Plus Mountain Gun Revolver in .357 Magnum,.38 Special, Plus P. Bluebook of Gun Values (29th Edition) indicates between $415 in 98% condition and $565 in 100% condition for this gun. I have 26 recorded prices using local and internet sources for this gun from $475 to $1063 over a period of 2087 days ending May 31, 2008. The average price as of that date was $631. Current or last MSRP is $790.

Thanks for the info.

I bought it new when they first came out. It only has been fired by the factory. I have the box and all papers.

I thought about selling it some time in the future and wasn't sure what to ask for it.

Thanks, Jocalz

The price trend was over $700 over a year ago. Here's the current track:

Here's a chart through September 2008. The solid green line is the price trend.

If you do a 90 day search on GB the last one to sell was used, no box with a BuyNow of $550.00...and it sold in 26 hours.. There is one on GB now that the Seller states the Reserve is $650 and the top bid is $625.00...excellet condition with box. The last one before that had an unknow reserve but Bidders quit a little over $700 and it didn't sell...

Thanks for the link to the auctions. Obviously, my listing is not exhaustive. I check when I feel like it and also add when someone points out sales, as you did.

It's a rare model and if I were selling mine (box, papers, etc), I'd reserve price it close to $700. If it didn't sell, I'd wait and offer it again in a few months. If I was in a real hurry and needed the money, I might lower the reserve price to the mid $600s as you suggest. Easier to reduce than to increase.

I think the $550 Gunbroker price might have been "salted" to get bids going.

The only "no reserve" MG I could find went for $730.05. Three "reserve not met" listings seem to be for the same gun.

I updated the chart and track, above.

I saw one recently sell for as little as $550 on gunbroker.com and I've seen them sell for 800+. There was a guy here for a while who was trying to corner the market and bought three or four in a couple of weeks.

What a deal!

(Chart & Track updated, above. That auction doesn't blow the graph at all, fits right in to the trend and raises the overall average price. Thanks for the reference.)

Jocalz - If you have not sold the Mountain Gun you can add my name to the list of interested parties. Thanks.

Get a 620. i have it and have had a mountain gun. Looks are as good in the 620 and it balances very similar. its my woods gun now.

A truly NIB 686-5 MG will easily fetch $600 without blinking. Typical going price on GB would be $700-800. Mr. Fugate would want $1000.
