I have a 686 4" no dash with a serial number AAB83XX.

My question is this a pre production 686 or what the heck do I have?

Thank you in advance.

You have exactly what you think you have. It's an early 686, based on the serial number.

Quote from the SCSW IV: "Although examples are known in the AAA serial range, regular production begins at serial prefix AAD, with the lowest known early production in s/n range AAA0095 - AAA0789."

So, not "pre-production" and not "regular production" - by the standards listed it would be an "early production" gun. Not sure if that enhances the value or not. Interesting for sure. Has it had the recall done? Again, don't know if having it done would hurt, help or have no effect on value.

Adios,

I have a AAA92xx serial number 586, and I have handled a 686 with a serial number AAA04xx. I don't think I ever lettered my 586, but I ordered it the day I first saw the new 586s at a Police conference, not sure if it was 1980 or 1981!

I have a 4-inch 586 with serial number AAA62xx that is dated to 1980 per a call to S&W and the SCSW.

I've never heard of pre-production 586/686 models......it's been my understanding that regular production began in 1980 with the AAA serial number prefix.
