6" out of the safe less than 500 rounds since new, no box, few scuff marks otherwise excellent. I was shocked at the gunbroker sales price report.

No M modification though. Would I hurt or help value to have the M modification done? tia

I doubt very much if sending it in for the mod would alter either price or demand. 500 rounds, a "few scuff marks" and no box pretty much takes it outta real collector value.

I did not like any of the choices for the poll.

Yes - If you're going to use it for defensive purposes.

Yes - If you've shot magnum loads and experienced the primer expanding rearwards and binding the cylinder.

Yes - If you just plain want it done.

No - If you only plan to shoot .38 special and don't want to give up your revolver for the time it takes S&W to repair it.

No - if you plan to never shoot it.

No - it's a plinker and I don't care but if it becomes a problem I'll send it back.

I don't think it affects the value on way or the other.

I think the correct answer to your question is:
It will not affect the value one way or the other.

It's silly not to have that mod done.

FWIW, I contacted S&W for the M mod on my 681. The answer I received was, "sure, we'll do it, but it's not necessary for your gun." The M is highly recommended on, say, my 586, but not on later SS models.

Was I mis-advised?

No - keep it unmodified so it can get an expedited FREE ride to and from Springfield if ever needed, saving the owner $50+ in shipping cost alone.

I got a good buddy that has a no dash 686 and it's never had the mod done. And since he's never had a problem with it hanging up I don't see where he needs the mod done either. But I told him about it and that the mod was done for free. And he still hasn't contacted S&W to get the mod done. So I think that if you aren't having problems, then don't sweat it.
