686 Plus Pro vs 686 SSR Pro

@158Grain-

Tell me a bit more about the canted barrel issue? I have a 610 revolver that's been in the family for a while and I'm seeing what seems to be that issue. The revolver still shoots very accurately, but I've had to move the rear sight to the far left to stay on target. Maybe it's worth a call to the shop and see what they recommend. Thanks.

Back on topic...yeah, buy both! I'm up to 4 S&W revolvers and they are very nice. I have the hots for either the 4" 325PD or the 327PD. Or maybe both if I could find 'em. Oh, and maybe a nice Registered .357. :D

I have owned numerous S&W revolvers over the years. I have had 686 in 4in also 6in. I also had a 686+7.. I didn't care for the 7 shot @ the time bc I was a dedicated PPC shooter however for bowling pins the+7 was great. I sent my 686 to S&W to have their gun smith who name was Vito. He completed a master revolver enhancements for my 686. I also had a wolff mainspring in it. All I have to say is BEAUTIFUL... . Its everything that I wanted & expect. I have a nice 29 model that I'm sending to S&W gunsmith soon as $$$$ allows.. I would personally find a model u like then send to S&W for performance refinements that u disire. IMHO that's the best way & cost effiecent then spending more $$$ for the elite models

Forged hammer? Crowned barrel? ...

Here is my take on the features listed.

Tuned action: I have never had a problem with timing on a S&W. I have on Colt and Dan Wesson revolvers. I have never gotten a bad trigger from S&W either. I am not going to say that it can't happen but I have never experienced it. Besides that, if it does happen, send it back they will fix it to your specs. Unless you are going to use double action all the time I can't see much improvement over the standard action S&W puts out.

Crowned barrel: Unless you are going to strap a scope to it and use it at better than 200 yards a crowned barrel will not be of much value. On a handgun that is.

Forged trigger: Come on... What is wrong with the standard trigger that a forged trigger is going to improve so much? Do you wear out triggers a lot? If so go for it. BTW: I believe they are both forged mine is case hardened that's all I need.

In the hands of someone like Hickok45 or any other experienced shooter a standard out of the box S&W will perform admirably.

This idea of a $10,000 gun in the hands of the inexperienced shooter out performing a stock out of the box gun in the hands of an expert will never happen. Don't let them hype you into thinking you are getting something more valuable than it really is.

If you are not going to CCW with it like you say get the longer barrel it will improve sight radius and your accuracy at distance. Really! No hype!

Go with the 686 +p I have one and love it. Spend any savings on ammo and put it through it. You can't buy eye hand coordination without ammo. If you want to trick it out get some sights that work better for you. Invest in a good grip and fit it to your hand better if you need to. But agonizing over hype isn't going to make you a better shot with it. Crowned barrel on a handgun ... LOL Gunsmith hype. If it don't shoot straight send it back.
