I posted earlier asking if the new 686 plus with 3" barrel was square or round butt and ordered it on line after reading your responses. Now looking at ammo. I will probably buy some 125gr Buffalo Bore lead free (low flash/low recoil) rounds but looking for other suggestions for self defense ammo. I know ammo is hard to find and expensive but looking for suggestions on HP rounds that you guys/gals may like. I currently have some Speer GD 135gr .357 Mag Short Barrel ammo for my 640 Pro. I'm thinking about some 158gr JSP for range time. I know everyone has an opinion and I appreciate them all.

Also, bought the 3-5-7- model with the unfluted cylinder. Love the cylinder but will probably change the grips for Altamont or something similar. Thanks!!

I have Remington 158 grain semi jacketed hollow points in mine. I live in a rural area so I may need it for two or four legged critters. It is heavy enough you can shoot whatever you want comfortably. Good luck with your decision!

I like the Speer GDHP ammo, but now the short barrel stuff in a 686, the 125gr or 158gr ammo.

I'm also a huge fan of the Winchester 145gr Silvertip .357 Magnum ammo. I carry that in my S&W M640.

Re: Federal American Eagle 357 158 gr soft points. Warm stuff even if it's primarily sold as range ammo. Having shot this myself out of a short barrel, it's loud. Makes me think it's loaded with H110 or similar which produces quite a boom in a snub.

Before I retired in 2018, I carried a 4" S&W 686-6 with the Speer 135 grain "Short Barrel" ammo. My off duty was a 3" S&W 13-3 with the same ammo. My backup was a 2" S&W 12-2 with Winchester 130 grain "Defend" standard pressure .38 Soecial ammo. They were all eminently accurate and controllable. YMMV.

My .357 series(same as yours) shoots 158 like a lazer beam, probably my most accurate Revo I own, I carry speer 135 +p in it around town with a 2 speed strips full of full nuts .357 125xtps in case things have to get serious and 158s hornady xtps

I love the Hogue Bantams, and I wish they made them for N frames. Yeah, I know they will fit anyway. The Bantams feel great on a 2-3" revolver. At four inches they start feeling kind of odd with the balance.

The Federal 125gr, JHP has always been the gold standard for stopping power. It would be hard to make a mistake with that load. I know, bonded, plastic tip, depleted uranium, $3 apiece high tech loads are carried by, insert the name of your favorite LE agency here, but that 125 load has ended more police gunfights than just about anything else. Followed by my favorite, the 158 grain, lead SWC. They just work without the hype.

My 3-5-7 model sporting HOGUE grips. This little baby likes Silvertips plus anything that you feed it. Love the gun with that 3" bbl and unfluted cylinder.
