I have a 686 6" on which the ejector rod does not seem to travel far enough. On all other Smiths that I have, the rod travels to flush with the crane when ejecting empties. The ejector rod on this 686 stops quite a bit short of flush. (about 7/16"), and the star moves less than the length of a .38spl case.
Any thoughts?
TIA

Is this a new gun or one that you've owned for some time now and has this always been a problem or did it just start?

No, it is a used gun, but I did not notice this until my son mentioned it to me. His 686 does go flush, and my 19, HP, and 25-5 all have more travel than this 686. My 19 will go past flush, and the HP and 25-5 go to the knurled end of the rod. This may not be a real problem, but I am curious if it is the nature of the beast?

My first guess is that it may be a slightly bent extractor rod, not quite sure what the best way to go about checking that would be but it is where I would start looking.

That was a good thought, but just don't think that is the case. The ejector rod travels without binding, and stops hard.
Thanks.
