My S&W 686 Stock Service Revolver came home today!

Let me just say this puppy shoots well. At ten yards 38 specials always hit the red. For an amateur shooter like me, I was pretty impressed. The recoil was almost nothing from the 38s.

I'm not used to the Magnums yet but they are pretty accurate too. Kind of obnoxious to shoot for a little guy like me, though. I'll be sticking to .38s unless I'm fighting bears.

This thing is big. It's a whole L-frame revolver. It is a 686-6 with a custom barrel. In person the new barrel looks a lot less boxy than in the side-profile pictures.

I am not used to revolvers. The extractor pin jammed on me and I lost my cool- thought I'd broke my gun on like the second load. The gunsmith repaired it for me real quick by tightening it up.

Sorry about the crappy quality. I'll update more photos later with a better camera. I'll gladly take requests for angles and shots, since there's hardly any pics of this model online.

What do you guys think? She's beautiful, isn't she???

Anyone else have a 686? Is there a very very light rattle in the back of the gun behind the cylinder?

Trying to figure out if this is natural.

My 686-6 has the same rattle, I think it is the rear sight--seems to float a bit.

I've heard that rattle as being "a normal part sound" of the internal hammer block mechanism rattling in its channel. I haven't noticed any rattle in mine...yet...

Not sure of validity of that statement, but it is possible I guess.....

Grrr....

The rattle is just behind or below the hammer. I don't have the appropriate parallel screwdriver to open the gun up so I can't peek inside. It seems to fire ok...

I have heard but am not 100% sure that the rattle is caused by the hammer block, and that it is nothing to worry about. Very nice 686.

Looks like some smiths rattle, some don't, from my research online. Weird. Still fires fine.

Got mine last week and very pleased with it. Although, from all of the photos I had seen I was expecting the grips to be brown--mine is a cross between and gray and green.

My Simply Rugged Pancake came today and it is awesome with the SSR.

Hey lzhome, can you link me to the holster you got for it?

My grips are a sort of brown tiger's eye color. I also tried the Uncle Mikes and they are also quality - I might keep them on simply to keep my wood stocks in serene condition. They've already got a couple nicks.

Those of you who have SSRs, are your charge holes chamfered? For the life of me, mine look just like the 686-6.

They are chamfered, but not very much. You need to look at them with the light hitting just right on the cylinder. You'll see the shiny edges. Maybe.

I like mine a lot, but I think those wood grips are atrocious. First thing I did was take them off, and replace them with Uncle Mike's square/round conversions. After the grip replacement and an action job, it was fit to shoot. Also added a fiber optic front sight, since I mostly shoot indoors.

I love my SSR. I thought the wood grips were pretty spiffy on mine but I found them unpleasant to shoot with. The Uncle Mike's fit my hand like they were made for it. I liked 'em so much I wanted to equip my other revolvers with them. Unfortunately, Uncle Mike's seems to have stopped making revolver grips and Smith sells only the round butt version.

I got the Sourdough Pancake from Simply Rugged.

stevieboy S&W still sells the round to square convertion Uncle Mikes grip which can be cut internally to fit the square butt frames
I cut a set that I bought at a gunshow to fit my square butt M547 & love the feel of them
There great copies of Craig Spegels Grips @ a great price & are great for range use were the fancy wooden ones could be damaged
Here's a Crappy Pic of my 547 & 940 9mm revolvers
