I WAS IN A SHOP YESTERDAY AND RAN INTO A MODEL 686 WITH 4 ADJUSTMENTS ON THE FRONT SIGHT. I HAVE NEVER SEEN THIS BEFORE. A ALLEN WRENCH IS REQUIRED AND THEN YOU TURN A COG UNDER IT TO CHANGE SHOOTING DISTANCE. ANY HELP IS APPRECIATED. IS IT A SPECIAL ORDER REVOLVER?

The adjustable fronts were available on 6" and 8 3/8" 586/686/629s' and the 10.5" model 29 Silhouette models. It allowed you to set your sights for 4 different ranges like used in Silhouette shooting. I've got one on a 686-4 from '94, seen several others but it wasn't a popular option.

I also saw one at a local shop the other day too. 6" barrel, shot alot, cleaned very little. Rear sight blade bent, they also had a 686 4" barrel from the same person, with half the rear sight blade broke off. I passed on them, I don't think the original owner took care of them.

Yes, it sounds as though the owner missed a lot of shots and used the gun itself to knock holes in the target ;) .

The silhouette front sight versions are uncommon but don't seem to command a big premium over a standard model.
