My first handgun ever purchased is a 6904 two tone. It's been a great gun to carry and very reliable. I have since bought a 457S and a M&P 45. Again, both great guns.

I did some searching on the 6904 just to see others' opinions and noticed that the 6904 typically came in a blued finish. Are the two tones rare? Were they some type of one-time production run?

Especially such as your question about a two tone gun!:)

I recall when I bought my 6906 'back in the day" I saw several two tone versions as well....always wondered if Smith did that or a dealer at the show was having a good time....but figured if the dealer was doing it serial #'s wouldn't match.....

6904

I'll post pictures in the morning. I bought it directly from a dealer, so I don't think anything alterations were done.

Unlike SIGs, which have matching serial numbers on the frame, slide and barrel, the 3rd GEN pistols that I own have on serialized frames. So it would be easy to swap parts, so long as the the tolerances remained within spec.

Very sharp. Nice snag! Btw, my 6946 has matching serial #'s on the frame, slide and barrel. I guess I figured that was normal...could that have been added later?

I've seen some early DAO guns with matched numbers, maybe that's so someone would not mix parts with DA/SA guns?

Possible. It has the # on the left side as normal above the model. But then has it in the same place on the right side, just above that on the slide and on the barrel visible at the ejection port. I didn't recall if my 6906 was like that or not...

That is a 2nd gen 669 slide on a 3rd gen 6904 frame - a 3rd gen slide would have a dovetailed front sight.

I always thought the 3rd Gen Smith's with the serial numbered barrels and slides were LE trade-ins, or if purchased new, factory over-runs on an LE order. That way, if the armorer had 10 guns apart at one time, he knew what went where. I worked in three different S&W stocking dealer stores, when 3rd Gens were available new. I do not remember any of them ever having the serial numbers on the slide or barrel. I think those lots had to be ordered special from S&W.

I came to that same conclusion last night while surfing on GB/GA and noticed the LE 6906 trades had the triple serial numbers like mine. I'd have to guess mine was an over run since there's no holster wear whatsoever.
