I have 2 6906's, one I purchased over 10 years ago, I just got another one and it has problems I am trying to figure out. If you load mag and rack first round in, it will fire just fine until empty.
BUT if you load round and decock it then try to fire DA the hammer will only come back part way and then will release without firing, you have to rack the slide to cock it and it will then fire just fine SA.
Another querk is if you decock after loading round the slide will NOT go back to cock the gun until you actually pull the trigger first.
AND the gun will also fire with mag removed???
This is an old police trade-in and I am wondering if the gun is broken or was modified to work this way as an added safety feature.
If I carry gun with no round in chamber and full mag, if I just rack the first round in and fire it everything is great. but I cannot carry with a round in chamber and hammer down unless I catch the hammer when I pull the trigger and pull it to full cock position then it will fire just fine DA.
Any ideas?

This seems very odd, and I am suddenly very concerned with picking up one of the LE trade-ins listed on Gunsamerica.

If you remove the slide and and look at the area just forward of the safety/decocker assembly and do not see a white plunger, someone has disabled the mag safety. As far as the other issues, I'm not quite sure what is going on... maybe the sear has been modified. A picture of the pistol with the grip off might help.

With LE trade-in pistols in general and Smith & Wessons in particular, this seems to be more the exception than the rule.

Where it is most likely to be the rule is when "Bubba" commences to "improving" his piece.

To paraphrase Herman Wouk from the Caine Mutiny: The Smith & Wesson handgun is a "Master plan devised by geniuses for execution by idiots."

They seem relatively simple but there's a lot more engineering involved than meets the eye.
Don't be concerned. They are very reliable and every problem that has ever been discovered has already been solved.

Let not your heart be troubled. Enjoy with (almost) abandon.

broken drawbar

Well I think I may have found the problem, the draw bar is split at the rear of the gun. With the grip removed I can hold the draw bar together and it seems the gun will function properly. At this point I am just guessing that is the problem but it sure seems likely at this point. now the next question to the S&W experts, am I on the right track or am I completely wrong?

I think we have a winner!

My 6906 does this as well. Just not nearly as badly, while dry firing with snap caps, after a SA pull, the trigger will start to bring the hammer back maybe less than 1/8th of the way, then snap all the way back and the hammer just drops with no force at all, second trigger pull will bring the hammer full swing and drop it normally, I believe from playing with it that it has to do with the sear getting worn down. New sear seems to solve the issue.
