6906: Help with sights and Is It an "Evidence" Gun?

Well, I had my new-to-me 6906 (I date it to around 1994 based on the VAN start of the serial) to the range and it ran well through a box of PPU 124 gr. FMJ (after I did a basic strip and clean up).

And then there's the pencil etching on the left side of the frame. Still haven't written to the dealer who sold it to me, but will after I finish this.

If anyone recognizes what's on the picture, I'd appreciate it.

After extensive searching, it appears that firearms marked like this have been subjected to asset forfeiture ("AF") proceedings in state or territorial courts.

AF = Asset Forfeiture
03 = 2003 (Year the case was initiated.)
1749 = Sequential case number of that year.
C.P.P. = Initials of case judge or court clerk.
Ex. 1 = Exhibit No. 1

If anyone can add to, or provide correction, concerning this info; please advise.

Additionally, this topic is discussed in another Smith & Wesson Forum thread:

Evidence, and Court Ordered Asset Forfeiture, Marked Firearms

I realize this is an old thread, but since it popped up yesterday, I relooked at first post and have a question to OP. The VAN serial prefix would imply 1994 which should have had Novak (or adjustable) sights.
It is possible someone replaced slide with an older slide with early sights or its possible someone put wrong sights in the original slide. I have a 6944 with the latter problem - early night sights put (forced? or remachined slide?) into a Novak cut (looks ugly - kind of like your picture).
I was wondering what you did with respect to replacing sights.
