I am looking for some help here, I am interested in buying a S&W third gen pistol in 9mm. I have come across a 6906 (that seems to be an ugly duckling on the outside) in the $300 range with one 15rnd magazine. I have also found a 4013TSW NR that appears to be in better condition with 3 magazines for
$379. My preference is for a 9mm as I have never owned or been interested in .40 cal. however the 4013TSW does seem to be the better deal. Ideally I would like a 3913, 908S or 4513 but the two mentioned above are currently in my budget.

I would probably buy the 4013 TSW and wait for a nicer 6906 to come along. If you don't really want a .40, then wait on a nicer 6906.

If I were buying a 6906, I would be looking for the latest production gun I could find. They are all good reliable guns but I think the last ones had a little accuracy edge. Maybe just my imagination... ? :D

I carry a 4006, .40 cal. I use to carry a 5906, 9mm. It was stolen. So I was shooting with a friend and his 4004. IMO the 40 is not any different than the 9mm as far as shooting goes. While both the 5906 and the 4006 are both quite heavy to carry, being an all metal frame, makes it look like something you don't want to get shot with. I have not ever been a fan of a plastic gun.!

If you are wanting a 9mm then pass on the 4013TSW even if it's in decent shape. A 6906 in good shape will come around soon but depending on your location I would expect to pay $350 to $400, more if LNIB. Black triggered guns are later production and I prefer those.

I own a few 40's and while they are fine and I like 'em they aren't 9mm's. If you want a 9 then get a 9 because the two calibers aren't interchangeable. JMHO.

I own both and if you were close I'd tell you to buy the 40 and I'll trade you the 6906
I myself love the 40 and when there were no 9mm or 45 a problem I was buying 40 every other week

I went with the PC version of both. The Shorty 40 and the PC 9.
I carry the 40 and shoot the 9 more for cheaper practice. They both feel the same in my hands and I really don't notice much difference shooting either one.

I say get the 4013 TSW and find a nice 6906 to go with it.

The 5906 and 4006s police trade ins can be had for $400 with a pair of hi caps. Both like nice hot ammo and then they shoot excellently. That's where I got mine.

If you want a 9mm, buy a 9mm. :) Honestly, it's that simple. ;)

lhump1961 has your answer. :) A nice Model 6906 (or 3913 or 908S) will show up soon enough. No need to settle for a "used & abused" gun or for a caliber you don't want. :) Patience is a virtue. ;)

Yep, if you want a 9 then wait for what you want. I prefer the 9 as well but I'm not against the 40's and I have to admit I would find that particular model rather tempting!

Is this a need or a want?

Do you need a hi-cap compact carry gun???? or just want a 6906???

If it's a need I'd grab the 4013 w/ three mags and 100 rounds of 40.

If you get the 6906 for $300 you still need to find at least a 12 round mag or two..... adds another $50-70 to the cost....

Keep looking for a nice 6906 then sell, trade or keep the 4013......any loss on a trade is "rental costs' spread over the months of years it takes to find the 6906 you really want.

Good luck!!!

Oh Lordy!!! A brand new variation on the infamous "Bam Formula"! :D :D :D

A 4013TSW NR with mags that cheap?

I just paid $560 for one and it came with one mag.
Maybe I've been looking for one for too long. I jumped at the price.

Both are fine guns, but if you want a 9, get a 9. If you want to carry and shoot it, don't worry too much about the looks. The guns are solid. I have both also.

I have a later production 6906 and a 4013TSW NR. I generally prefer to shoot 9mm for most situations however my 4013TSW is a far superior shooter to my 6906- it holds tighter groups for sure.

At $379 you just can't go wrong with the 4013TSW. Look, if for some reason it doesn't make you forget about wanting a 6906 you can easily more than get your money back out of it and turn it around for a 9mm.

One thing I definitely would not do is purchase a rough looking 6906, but I'm one of those "condition matters" types and it's a fact nice 6906's are still readily available.

Hi there.
Well, I will throw in my two cents worth here....
The FBI shooting data shows one inescapable, with modern defense ammo, there is no difference between a 9mm, a 40 or a 45.
With that said, and the fact you want a 9mm, then get the 6906.
What is worn on the 300 dollar one? a bad looking grip?
Brownells has brand new ones for 19.99.
The third gen pistols are all overbuilt, and can fire lots of rounds.
The mags are meant to be the 12 round units with the finger cap end. You can get Marlin camp 9 mags (There the same with a flat floor plate) and get a new finger floor plate from Brownells, there like 2.99.

If you can, take that 6906 apart and look to see if it is shot worn or just warn from being carried in a holster. I see these holster worn one for cheap, but mechanically there solid as a rock, remember, it's a tool, not a showpiece, if it's sound and your going to carry it, you'll end up giving it holster wear as well.

My point here is this, if it's still in solid shape, then get it and use it, and keep looking for a better one to add to your collection.
